Really the last century is more of an anomaly than the norm. The difference is you usually have some distant empire ruling it rather than the natives.

For peace it does seem to require heavy external supervision. The holy land hasnt seen peace in a long time. im surprised its not more green considering the amount of blood and bone in that soil.
