There is such a thing as too much homework. Some schools give out so much that it takes an average student multiple hours to everyday complete. This can result in burn out and even if it doesn't it can work against learning. If your energy goes to just getting trough the day, you have less to actually learn. Quantity vs. quality type of thing. To be effective learner one needs rest and relaxation too, similar as getting fit. You do need the exercise, preferably exercise that pushes your body more than it can comfortably handle, but if you don't rest and give time for healing you will not get full benefits or worse get hurt.
Still in general homework isn't a bad thing by itself, it's mostly positive. It gives kids time to figure out stuff on their own, re-enforces what the lessons, gives them opportunity to pick up something they missed in class, is necessary for certain type of work and entourages students to learn self discipline and time keeping. These are all positive things that can serve them well into adulthood. Plus it's not like most professionals completely check out when they leave work. It's perfectly normal to get a call or look something up for work in your free time.
