When I was an RN we had a woman with really nasty gas gangrene in both legs. They amputated up to above the knee but it just kept spreadng, They then decided to do a hemicorporectomy but she didn’t make it off the operating table. It was very sad. Her husband sat with her all day everyday despite the overwhelming nauseating smell. The hospital hired in air purifiers for her room but it was still so bad that we all took turns nursing her. Fortunately she was mostly semiconscious so wasn’t that aware. It seemed to me a mercy that she didn’t survive the surgery as she was an older woman with multiple health problems.
In my darkest moments I thought that the surgeons took her to theatre to ‘have a go’ at a very rare procedure rather than really believing that it woukd help her.
