In theory, liberalism goes against most of the things that the left advocates. They were very close when leftism was about freedom of speech, mostly because the common enemy was fundies. But here is one think I've learned in the past five years or so: whenever given the choice, liberals will always end up playing for the left, even if not by choice. The only thing they like about the right is economic freedom. Talk them about duty or patriotism, and they will flinch. Kids could be mass castrated to troon them and they won't move a finger because "but the economy goes well!".
So, yeah, liberalism is leftism in everything but name. The only ones who disagree are leftists, but because they're so extreme, that liberalism is for them literally nazism.
This is a gross simplification of the political quad which is itself a simplification. Broadly, the primary value of the right is virtue while the primary value of the left is equality; these two things are antithetical as virtue implies judgement, and judgement implies an inequality of things.

The other axis of the quad represents libertarianism/authoritarianism, which is in some ways a gradient between optimism and pessimism. There can be right wing authoritarianism —national socialism, which believes that virtue requires a guide— or right wing libertarianism —ancap roughly, which assumes the virtuous will simply assert themselves. Similarly there can be left wing authoritarianism —soviet communism, which believes that equality must be enforced— or theoretically left wing libertarianism —ancom, which assumes that people will just get along maaaaaan (read as braindead slurping noises).
It is quite possible to be right wing and simultaneously liberal. Consider this, can the tranny exist unsubsidized? Furthermore, without the state punishing rightfully concerned parents would trans children even be a thing? Perhaps the leftoid would still troon their child, but this is simply natural selection —the natural judgement of virtue. In truth, the state is a poor guide for virtue; it's elements are mere men, by nature ambitious men, and so it will act only out of it's desire to further it's own power. The tranny and generalized faggot are by their nature removed from history, and without a future to think about they make for nonthreatening and malleable economic units, for this reason the state pushes these empty self absorbed behaviors.
I think you mistake libtards for liberals. Over the past century the word liberal has become worn and handmedown, it has become the default label. Yet, these default liberals, these default people, are simply dust blown by the wind and their apparent liberalism is just a label for their complacent drifting.
