Netflix is about to rape the Sandman

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Why Twitter did you have to make me aware of this incoming nightmare?

And even worse they've got Neil Gaiman to simp for this horrifying assault on his work. He's there on twitter defending it. The showrunner is the writer of Wonder Woman.
What's wrong with that? It looks like a typical Netflix production to me.

The Sandman and American Gods are two of my favorite books (comic and real, respectively). Haven't seen the AG TV series, not going to watch the Sandman series either. Quoting myself from the Netflix thread:
Desire's an it. Gaiman was very carefully to always refer to Desire as it in dialogue and captions, because each Endless is a single essence expressed through multiple persons or aspects acting independently. The singular pronoun draws out this paradox and adds to the mystique of these alien beings. The only exceptions are the occasional royal we and a story where a bunch of different versions of Dream got together and didn't know which pronoun to use.

They changed that in the audiobook, when Desire became they/them/we/us. They also changed one or two other things related to troons because the original 80s/90s progressiveness of the comics would now be considered deeply offensive and harmful. If the series lasts long enough they're going to have a heck of a time adapting A Game Of You, in which the transwoman can't do moon magic stuff because her chromosomes are still male. Maybe she'll say something fierce to the goddesses and they'll apologize and promise to educate themselves and do better.

Depending on your definition of redhead, we've lost three more: Unity Kincaid (auburn), Miranda Walker (auburn), and Rose Walker (dyed). I don't think anyone is maintaining that collage of comic book redheads who have been blacked, there's too many of them for any one person to track now. They didn't even need to do this because Sandman already had some really interesting parts for black actresses. They could have expanded Nada's role, or introduced Ruby earlier. But wherever there are redheads, they must be blacked.
Also, you see the old version of Ethel Cripps? She's John Dee's mother. The actress is two years younger than Dee's actor. Netflix might be woke, but they still discriminate against older actresses. Stephen Fry as G. K. Chesterton is pretty funny, though, I'll give them that.

Not sure what to think yet, since I still need to read the comics. From what I can tell, the main point of contention is Death not being pasty-white.
The character's look is pretty iconic, probably better known than Dream himself. She had a role in every Sandman story, a couple of her own miniseries, would appear in other Vertigo titles, and had a ton of merchandise. Mike Dringenberg modeled her on a real person he knew, and a couple of the more well-known images are just photographs he traced. The later interpretation by Chris Bacchalo is a little cuter, but still the same person. The model, Cinamon Hadley, died a few years ago. In poverty, I think, but surrounded by friends and family. It feels disrespectful, in a way I can't quite articulate, to discard her image now.

Yeah if you want any kind of adaptation with audio the dramatic reading/audiobook is definitely the way to go.

I mean, basically the whole cast is perfect. Kat Dennings would've been the perfect big tiddy goth GF Death we deserved if Netflix wasn't absolute garbage.
Also, why is the adaptation on Netflix anyway? Isn't Sandman a DC property?

Holyshit, that audio casting is great. Michael Sheen as Lucifer? Mcavoy as Morpheus? Andy Serkis as the Raven!? Hell yeah!

Man, the Netflix casting is garbage compared to that.

Man, that's depressing to see when compared to the Netflix casting. Especially Serkis as Matthew, that's a fantastic pick they could have easily done here but nope. Gotta keep propping up the wife-murdering "funny" man.

Hope it's all been worth it, Neil. I hope you love every second of trying to appease these dipshits as they rape your works.

Yes he did and he tries to hide it. But we all know he did
He does a terrible job at it. This is the explanation Google gives as to how she died:

“McNamara died unexpectedly in her sleep on April 21, 2016, at age 46, while she was working on a true crime book about the Golden State Killer.”

“Unexpectedly in her sleep... while she was working on a true crime book...

How can you work on a book asleep? What “unexpected” occurrence killed her in her “sleep”? Many more questions than answers.

That just refers to what she was doing prior to death, i.e. she was working on her book and then went to sleep.
