Netflix is about to rape the Sandman

Netflix trying to do a speedrun of how fast they can ruin another adaptation. I've never read any of Sandman, but luckily I know this show is a complete no go.

At this point they've broken Sci-Fi Channel's record for biggest string of shit put to film and TV. I mean Sci-Fi's adaptation of Dune still somewhat holds up even today(even if it's by default due to every other version fucking up).

I have all the leather bound collectors editions of the Sandman books.

These are not comics that aged well. They seem to be re-tellings of existing mythology. I probably wouldn't own them if not for the nostalgia factor.

I think it's kinda an unspoken rule that comic books really only work best as animated adaptations with a few exceptions here and there, which is probably why the Invincible Amazon series is so good because it actually looks just like the comic in animated form and it's not filled with a bunch of woke BS like race swapped characters and diversity hires.

I really liked some of his stuff, but rereading the Gaiman books, it's almost all subversive, and seemingly intentionally and even hamfistedly so. Honestly he was writing woke stuff before people called it woke.

The Endless do have specific human forms. Gaiman either came up with them all or borrowed/stole them from others.

* Dream has been an alien-looking white guy with straight black hair ever since the series was first pitched, with sketches by Gaiman, McKean, and Baulch. His second aspect is a grown-up form of Lyta and Hector Hall's kid, the son of two pre-existing characters he incorporated into Sandman.

* Death was originally supposed to look like Nico, but the artist modeled her on Cinamon Hadley and Gaiman approved that.

* Destiny was a pre-existing character.

* Desire is just that Patrick Nagel woman, the one you used to see in nail salons and tanning parlors.

* Despair is Desire's twin and should be equally white.

* Delirium first appeared as a teenage scene girl so I wouldn't be surprised if she was modeled after someone Gaiman or an artist wanted to fuck. She's also a redhead, so we know what they're going to do to her. Bonus points if they just rehire Crazy Eyes from Orange Is The New Black.

* Destruction was evidently modeled after Brian Blessed before Jill Thompson gave him a less imposing physique.

It's true that the Endless look different to different people--Dream is an African when speaking to Nada and a cat when speaking to other cats, Delirium is Asian when working the San Francisco opium dens--but 99% of the time they have their normal appearance, even when no humans are around. Because that's what Gaiman wanted them to look like. The artists worked in their own styles, but they were always working from the same designs.

I'm still fond enough of the original run. I'll give this a chance but after Good Omens I am not optimistic.

However, and spoiler here for those who haven't read the comics

Spoiler: It may get a bit "problematic"

unless things adjust massively Desire is going to come out at the end looking the most evil. Since the run includes a long plan by Desire to get the current incarnation of Dream to kill himself. To the extent of basically (given everyone consents to Desire because of its nature) raping someone specifically to father a child that would facilitate this. Given what eventually does lead to Dream's death which is slightly different even that could be considered a Desire scheme that succeeded.

It's interestingly done and all of the Endless are depicted as perpetually inhuman throughout with Death probably the closest to have a human set of moral standards so judging it by those standards is deliberately awkward. But Desire is probably the closest thing to "the" villain of the overall run.

Put it in generic terms it's essentially the story of how the genderfluid character gaslights their autistic sibling into topping himself. Which somehow I suspect may not make it into the show which is a shame because it was interesting.

We don't live in a free society anymore, everyone is being forced to think a certain way and say certain things, there's no way to tell who's being genuine and who is just not willing to risk sticking their neck out.

Now granted that doesn't exactly let Gaiman off the hook entirely, it makes him a bit cowardly at the very least because the only power these people have is the power we give them by not speaking out and letting them get away with their bullshit.

I really feel like at this rate there's not going to be a single white actor left in western media, literally every last cast member of every single thing is going to be black lol.
