Summer 2020 was in the middle of the economic crash from the pandemic which made it a lot worse. Now states are opening up again the economic triggers for chaos are less. I'd be surprised if this summer is as bad as the last one was.

Maybe because we are social creatures and an internet screen and social media (including the glorious farms) are poor substitutes for real life and most of these sad sacks aren't exactly chasing financial gain per say, but prestige is what they crave.
When you build your identity around being smarter than people that you deride online, finding out that you are just a tad below average on a quantifiable metric has to give just a bit of cognitive dissonance.
