My take? All the media hysteria in March 2020 onwards made a lot of people realize and fear their own mortality for the first time in their lives. It's shocking how many people in the world never really conceptualized that one day, no matter what they do, they will die.
The mask is sort of a security talisman or safety blanket for them. By wearing it, they feel like they're protected from dying once again. However, the media pumped out the (true) fact that unless we're talking about a N95 mask and goggles, it doesn't do shit to protect you. At best, it's a strapped on sleeve sneeze. So, the governments (desperate to keep the pleb tiers going to their menial wage jobs and consooming from the businesses and stores they allowed to stay open) put out the mandates to make the manchildren who realized they were mortal just functional enough to still keep the money rolling in.
Also, it makes the government look like they're 'doing something', and it also transfers all the blame from government incompetence and the inevitability of death and disease to the individual, it allows people to blame every case, every restriction, etc. on people not complying hard enough with their masks. That's why they're so rabid about the masks and "Anti-maskers". To them, it's a magic talisman which removes the sheer horror they experienced being confronted by the concept of their own death.
This was the take told to me by a close contact of mine who doesn't believe in any of the conspiracy stuff, but thinks all this COVID-19 shit is dumb. And personally, I think it's the most rational take to all the bullshit we've experienced over the past year and a half.
This is also why they're obsessed with the vaccine, they feel that by getting vaccinated, they can go back to their child-like bliss of never having to be confronted by the thought they will die someday.
Good points.
Spent 39 months in Korea, two tours, mid 70's to early 80's. In the winter Koreans often wore masks, imagine as some sort of defense against colds/flu, but that was strictly an individual decision. I never wore a mask, myself. So I didn't expect much benefit, if any, by anyone wearing masks in Wuhan, or Korea, or anywhere else.
During the time in Korea often went to the local open-air market, or si-jang. Everyone from the nearby large US air base went to the market at some time or other. Just a neat place to check out, go broke saving money. Worst medical thing arising from any visit to the market was some diarrhea the first time I ate an Asian pear. After then, no sweat, ate anything I chose to. If the market, like the hundreds and hundreds of similar markets all over Korea, was a place to contract diseases the Korean Government would have had the place cleaned up, whatever it took to make sure the place was safe. Can't see anything different happening anywhere else you had the open-air markets, which are all over the world when you think about it, just to different extents. Brought this up early in the thread, now nearly 18 months ago.
That's also why I have never bought the Chinese bullshit about the disease being spread by bats coming out of a market. The open-air markets are vital food distribution channels in China. Need to be as sanitary as possible within local customs. Bet if you want to open-air markets now in China you'd likely see things back pretty much to normal.
Yeah, this thread is nearly 18 months old, older than two of my grandkids. Originally thought the thread might last a few months. Believe it will be here for a very long time to come. We've done little more than just scratched the surface of this debacle. Effects will be reverberating for years, if not decades. As a side thought, wonder what's happened to those "instant hospitals" in Wuhan. Would be surprised if they were still even in partial use. Need something built badly, you tend to get something built badly.
I thank everyone who has contributed to the thread. YOU made this happen, I just started it. Can't remember a time when I have seen so many knowledgeable people worldwide sharing their info/ideas/wisdom. You can tell a thread is worth staying with when you learn easily as much or more than you contribute. We are now seeing the "mainstream" finally pull their heads out of their asses and acknowledge this virus was created by the Chinese. We'd been saying this just about from the get-go.
Also believe in our own way we have been a lifeline to some out there who needed some contact, to help them fight off depression, let them know they aren't by themselves out there. In any major breakout of disease, believe for every X number of actually die of the disease, a smaller number succumb to ancillary causes due to worry/fear/depression, the "four walls" syndrome. As I can, reach out to those seeming to feel up against it. When someone reaches out to me have always responded. Bet there have been innumerable private conversations where KFers have helped each other out.
Let's keep on trucking.
