I still can't figure out the fascination with this dude.
Why he's popular? Who the fuck knows, dude has the same level of charisma as the piece of white bread you put in with your brown sugar to keep it from drying out.
Why we're fascinated? He's the unholy intersection between egotistical youtubers, cult leaders, dumb kids, dumb social media, celebrity worship, stan culture, and autism, mixed with a dash of gross incompetence.

Also, what is it lately with celebrities in general bringing up old shit everyone had already forgotten about and making themselves look bad for no reason?
"There's no such thing as bad publicity"
Celebrities rely entirely on recognition alone it's how they make money doesn't matter if they are hated or loved either one gets people to watch your every step either because they are kissing the ground you walk on or hoping your trip over and die and if people are watching you constantly then you are the perfect option for corporate ADs.
For them the worse possible scenario is to have a neutral/bored response because eventually if nobody loves you nor hates you people just forget about you, so to them its preferable to be the worse absolute villain comparable or worse to Hitler than have no audience at all, this is also one of the core qualities of a lolcow how low are they willing to go for scraps of attention.
Dream probably felt like his relevance was slipping or saw numbers dipping and decided it was time for round 2 with the hornet nest

The video screencaps were literal frame by frame differences. There is no way in hell that Dream would have been able to, in the matter of HALF a frame, press 2, and 3.

Here's my recording going frame by frame up until the splice, going back and forth, and then forward on. The hesitation makes no sense. if you're gonna make such a mistake in half a frame (which you can't) then why stop midway as if you're confused? Dream has definitely been a bad actor in the sense of he can't act, so it's kind of obvious this was him trying to be like "whoa whut"
i did it frame perfect in the video though. Looks indistinguishable from dream. Here's a frame by frame:
Edit: its super easy to fat finger this shit, especially for a 300lb (optimistic) fatass like dream.

I still can't figure out the fascination with this dude.
for me it was the novelty, a friend of mine showed me a video of a Speedrunner vs regular players in Mario 64, and Dream's manhunt videos appeared in my recommended shortly after, I enjoyed the first couple of videos I watched because of the whole Speedrunner vs regular players, but it quickly became obvious that they are letting him win, one of his recent videos shows them cornering him 3 on 1 he has barely any health left and they decide to retreat instead of finishing him, there is another instance where he jumps over a lava pit and as he is in mid-air there is a jump cut to where he is already on the ground and running away I'm almost sure he fucked up that jump and simply edited it out.

tl:dr It was a novelty that eventually wore of (for me at least)

Not too certain, but I feel like this is all due to Clay's popularity waning. Don't know about you guys, but I've seen very little about DSMP recently as the hype has worn off a lot. From what I've seen, general public opinion towards him is mostly negative (I'll blame the stans for a lot of this lmao). Hoping next controversy's damage-control will be a face reveal!

for me it was the novelty,
This hits the nail right on the head. I got into Dream's channel around late 2019-early 2020, up until the SMP started basically. A lot of it is a childhood nostalgia for Minecraft, and it was nice to see new life breathed into a community I once loved. However, the internet isn't the same as it was during Minecraft's first peak (2011-2013 give or take), and I think that's why we've seen this turn into such a cesspool, given current stan culture and social media environment.

Anyways, I hope this meltdown arc continues <3
Dream X Nikocado collab?
