Pokémon (Not-So) Griefing Thread - Scarlet and Violet Released with 10 Million Copies in First 3 Days in Buggy States

And there’s a glitch where Ditto can’t use the animations of certain signature moves (e.g. Behemoth Blade, Pyro Ball) that I’m pretty sure wasn’t a problem in Sun and Moon.
It wasn't. But I believe that's intentional now; they programmed it as such because why would a Ditto be able to do these elaborate, and in the case of the Box Legends, flashily animated moves. It's cutting corners, but it's definitely intentional again, from what I've seen. Maybe Dunsparce will enlighten us.

But why does Ditto not move at all and clip through the floor when it uses Behemoth Blade? That’s definitely shitty programming.

Is there anyone in this thread who unironically likes Sword and Shield? No hatred from me, just curious. My brother seems to like it.
I unironically like Pokémon Sword and Shield. While I believe tha the criticism is on-point and tha the Pokémon Company is getting complacent, the fun of Pokémon i still there in those games.
(That makes those games a 'guilty pleasure' to me...)

I think Game Freak sort of boxed themselves into a corner with the whole "high resolution models" fiasco. The implicit promise made was that the visuals were going to be impressive and represent a departure from what we had seen before. And when it turned out that the games were basically upscaled 3DS graphics with the same old Game Boy-era programming and no HD Pokemodels, a lot of people had had enough.

I did not necessarily dislike Shield, but throughout I was given constant reminders about how ass-backwards the Pokemon series has become and how much potential Game Freak leaves on the table. It is no surprise that Sword and Shield became a divergent point for many fans of the series.

I think The Pokemon Company are lucky that their creation is as unique as it is, such that it makes it hard for a competitor to edge in and take some of their lunch. But some real competition is probably the only thing other than a change in management that would light a fire under their ass. Yesterday I mentioned Inazuma Eleven, a fucking soccer/DBZ mashup that is one of the closest things to Pokemon I've found. And it does the Pokemon part really well. Up to and including training and trading. But there is so engaging gameplay to back it up.

That's a primary reason why I shitpost about first gen all the time. Yes the games look shinier now. Yes there are more Pokemon. Yes there is a larger world. But despite all of that, as a video game Pokemon has yet to evolve past basic form. There has been no real growth, just more things strapped to the sides. Shield was neat but their attempts at gym challenges to add unique gameplay were just lame. The open world was just lame.

This new open world game looks interesting. But forgive me if I don't hold my breath. Yeah they'll add more stuff like they always do. But how will the fundamental formula of the game improve?

I always think back to Pikachu setting off the fire sprinklers. Incorporate more environmental factors to add variety to battle. Elements are a huge aspect of the game, do more with them and the interplay between them. Earlier in the thread I saw discussions about turning old franchise spin-offs like pinball into minigames to add variety and other avenues of competition. Flesh out the world more. The actual in-universe competition is usually somewhat bland and it doesn't seem like there are enough competitors. Expand that and make it a real contest. Add an additional online gym challenge and force players to fight real people to actually earn a badge. I can keep going. Field encounters with multiple trainers attempting to catch the same Pokemon; how about you let me bargain with another trainer to get them to back off. Or maybe they have a better offer and I back off. And later on they assist me or something. Let me buy a house! That's always a fun side game. Tons of games do it now. Why not Pokemon? Add some more logical gameplay loops that mesh with the formula and the community.

Earlier today I mentioned monster catching in Dragon Quest. It added something to the existing game and world and each enhanced the other. With Pokemon you end up with disparate systems side by side, but rarely integrated with one another to form something more. I think that's a big part of the problem and leads to very sterile games that are packed with lots of repetitive content.

Also Ponyta is the best Pokemon.

When will they make a giant game where we can catch them all?? That's what I want. Doesn't even need to be super lame 3D like Sword and Shield.
The way I see it, they can never make a 'definitive' pokemon game cause then either customers have no reason to buy the new games afterwards or gamefreak would have to make every game after that a definitive+ game and that would be a big workload and clusterfuck.

Oh I thought of another. Remember how Ash and his friends had to navigate a harsh world filled with mountains and rivers and deserts and forests? Maybe Game Freak could call the year 1996 and develop some sort of physics engine and start including actual traversal of the land and basic platforming, exploration and problem solving. It would be a huge improvement over the large system of hallways they have been using since the 90s.

Updated my post after you quoted it, what’s your take on the cutscenes that fade to black or the Zacian/Zamazenta turning “animation”? Also, it’s worth noting that Decorate is a signature move and yet it’s still just a particle effect with a bounce. And there’s a glitch where Ditto can’t use the animations of certain signature moves (e.g. Behemoth Blade, Pyro Ball) that I’m pretty sure wasn’t a problem in Sun and Moon.
Really getting into specific situations that I don’t remember all that well. Like I said, I’m not blind to it’s problems, but I more see it’s weaknesses as inevitable or consequential to its circumstances or other requirements. the cutscene animations I attribute more to creative burnout than anything else.

Making shinys a goal, rather than a more serendipitous occurance also cheapens then a great deal.
I know I value the shinies I get specifically because I wasn't gunning for any of them, but then again I feel like I got good ones appearance wise. Noctowl, Zangoose, Braviary, and Aurorus.

I'm curious - what did you like about them? I hate them with a passion so I'd like to hear a response from someone who isn't a consoomer who thinks everything Game Freak does is right.
I liked the new Pokemon, especially Obstagoon, Grimmsnarl, Spectrier, Frosmoth, and Wooloo. I really liked the characters for the most part. I loved Leon. I don't care if he's just there for fanservice, he's a Champion who actually has fun, and tries to get shit done at the exact same. Also, the fact that he gets lost in his own home town because he literally has no sense of direction is hilarious to me.

The graphics are not nearly as bad as people say they are with places like the mines, and mushroom forests actually looking very beautiful, and being some of best looking areas in the entire franchise. The game does have a lagging issue, and some of animations are kind of jank, but for most part, these are the best looking mainline Pokemon games we've had so far imo.

I liked the camp and cooking mechanics even if I thought they could've been expanded a lot more. Watching my Pokemon scamper across the camp was really cute, and so was playing and cooking with them.

The battling was still very fun. I liked designing my team, and using new 'mons. I liked having to get creative, and shit. I didn't care for Dynamaxing, or Gigantamaxing, and lack of otherwise staple moves annoyed me, but I still had fun just going around, and battling, and catching Pokemon. I really appreciated being able to actually see the 'mons I wanted and not have go through a bunch of random encounters until I did. The battle music was also really good, especially the gym leader theme which I'd argue is one of the best tracks in the entire series.

I liked some of the gym leaders, especially Piers because not only did we finally get a Dark-type gym leader, we got one who's also a rockstar. I also really loved Raihan. I don't care if he's literally just a human Charizard, and also just there for fanservice. He's cool, and clearly has fun with what he's doing. Despite the fact that's he's the Dragon-type gym leader, he's still a really laidback who just wants to just battle, and have a good time.

And I guess when you get down to it, I have the same mindset.

Listen, I don't care if Pokemon doesn't have the best graphics, or a bad story, or if it's too easy, or whatever. I never played it for that. I played it to have fun.

Pokemon for me was always just about going around, collecting 'mons, battling, and having fun. It was never anything else, and I was fine with that. It didn't need to be for me. It if happens to have a good story, and graphics, and a balanced difficulty then great. Shit, that's why I think Gen V is still the best one to this day. But it doesn't have to have that stuff for me to enjoy it.

It just needs to be fun, and at the end of the day, even with all its flaws, SWSH were still that to me. And if that makes me a consoomer, or whatever, then fine. I really don't care. I just wanna battle, and have a good time.

One more thing I liked about Sword and Shield; Exp. Candies and Nature Mints. They’re very useful for preparing competitive mons. Exp. Candies completely break single player though, Game Freak probably should’ve locked the bigger ones behind postgame.
Or given the game a STEEP level curve.

I mean, technically the first gym is like level 20 but still

long post
I see.

I... actually don't see you as a consoomer. If you were, then you wouldn't even be willing to talk to me after knowing that I really hate SWSH. You would just insist that I was wrong and I wasn't valuing what Game Freak was giving me.

You know what? I actually respect the fact that you genuinely enjoyed the games for more than just them being Pokemon games. Like, one of my favourite games that I still play to this day is Black & White by Lionhead Studios - it's a buggy mess and most gamers hate it, but I love the game with all my heart. It's fun - and that's what's important to me.

I don't like the general playerbase for SWSH - but you and others like you? Yeah. You're cool. 👍

You basically hits my every thought about the games right on the head. The Wild Area is the only really graphically lacking part of the overworld, the regular routes and towns are great looking. Hell when I'm doing online battles I'll fly to Ballonlea just for the atmosphere and backdrop while I'm waiting for a match.

I think the Gen VIII gyms are by far my favorite rendition of them. Gym battles, especially against the leaders, are major events within the world of Pokemon and have significant meaning for the trainer taking the challenge. The fact that they have these massive sports stadiums with huge crowds really does a good job of conveying that and makes it feel like it's actually a big deal within the world, rather than just being a big building in the town.

Yeah this is my whole thing with SWSHfags, if you like the game that's fine but if you start to say you're going to break off my friendship because of me joking about a middleware developed monster catcher game, you need help to stop having an insane parasocial relationship with a franchise that only views you for merch sales.

I am with Bunny Tracks, SWSH is a perfectly average pokemon game, except Leon and the Elite Four Replacement made it feel like more of an In World actual Sport. Which is a massive step up over whatever the fuck Gen 7 was doing with the Totem Garbage and the Elite Four basically being the Professor Jerking himself off.

Kukui was such a non-character unless the story demanded it like with the battle royale stuff, but I will say I liked the twist of the professor being the Champion. I was really disappointed when the champion in USUM was replaced to be just Hau, because I hated Hau, even his champion theme is worse than Kukui's champion theme. I've never really understood people's hate for Hop over Hau, because at least Hop actually has a character arc.

Hau and Hop are, in many ways, the same character. Whatever character arc Hop has gets overshadowed by him being a clone of Hau.

Not to mention how Team Yell is just a lame rehash of Team Skull, and Chairman Rose had the same “twist” as Lusamine.
