Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Miraculous Ladybug is my favorite example of this. It manages to have a racially diverse cast and even gay characters while actually being well written and not feeling like it’s playing the “woke” game. If I wasn’t unfortunately educated on how Internet People think, I wouldn’t have even batted an eye over these things in it.

It’s not American-made, so I wonder if that’s a factor. The show really feels like it could have come from the early 00s when tv shows, especially those intended for kids, were “diverse” without it being a political statement (which, the creator/director formerly worked on Totally Spies, W.I.T.C.H., and Code Lyoko, so he definitely has his roots in the old era).

Anyway, it has a very strong hatedom that I’ve found to be more laughable and worrisome than anything SU crits or Voltron antis ever did. They somehow manage to stay under the mainstream radar, but they’re an absolute salt mine. Every episode, every character’s actions, every writing choice, every breath the staff takes, is met with callouts and bitching from teens/adults on the internet competing for woke points with comprehension skills lower than that of a 5 year old, who can’t distance themselves from cartoons nobody is forcing them to watch.

Creator is based af and doesn’t put up with whiny shits on twitter though

I’ve actually heard a lot of stuff about that guy, not good things either. Apparently he’s got this weird hate boner for a character in the show, to the point of claiming her to be racist, more evil than the main bad guy, completely unredeemable, a slave owner, ect.

I’ve seen him described as a more successful Dobson in regards to criticism, to sum it up.

Well the new trailer for Cuckflix's Masters of the Universe: Revelation came out today.

Kevin Smith said it's going to be respectful to the source material, but I have my doubts because people have already said that this trailer's a bait and switch and Teela (with her lesbian haircut) is going to be the main character instead of He-Man. /co/mblr loves it.

Surprisingly (or not), it actually goes back around to my initial statement. It’s not so much criticism, rather, it’s people engaging in internet culture and misinterpreting fiction left and right and making demands that it bend to their agenda, because cartoons are all they watch and want to look woke for it, and he’s not afraid to call them out.

I don’t think he has a hate boner for her, he’s just fed up with some people demanding the character be something she’s not intended to be. Chloe is a textbook “mean girl” (think Bonnie from Kim Possible, for example). She talks down to anyone who’s not on her family’s level of wealth/social status, and there was once an incident where she stereotyped Marinette. As with any antagonistic character, there are going to be apologists (or stans, as the kids say), who think that this character can do no wrong and deserves to be “redeemed,” even when there’s nothing in canon that points towards that making sense, at least not at the moment. Because this is the internet in the 2020s, people’s way of expressing their personal qualms with fiction is to spam the person in charge. While the best thing would be to not acknowledge the trolls at all, we’ve seen that almost nobody working in animation can stay off of social media. Some of his statements don’t always land well, but I don’t think he’s got bad intentions. It’s more a matter of neither side being able to stop talking. But I do give him props for at least trying to point out fandom stupidity.

That aside, my main point is that the show itself just comes off as a good time and doesn’t try to over complicate things. It’s just a magical girl/superhero story, with interesting lore and likeable characters, and it doesn’t try to be more than what it is, or to pander towards older viewers or the “woke“ crowd, despite having good representation in a lot of areas, so it’s definitely a breath of fresh air that only a couple of other recent animated series have pulled off. And, as mentioned in my initial statement, boy does it get flack for being chill. It’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but for anyone it genuinely appeals to, it’s pretty damn good.

Ironic considering that /co/mblr was preemptively shitting on Revelations for the crime of not being She Ra. Though as mentioned before, they probably just want to coom to Teela.

As for the show itself, I want to stay cautiously optimistic and hope Smith is telling the truth because so far they have the look nailed down; truer to the original source but still updated for a modern crowd. Always a good sign as is being animated by Powerhouse Studios.

Makes me wonder if we’ll get any news on the CGI MotU for kids.

Fuck, news is popping today. Castlevania spin-off announced...starring Trevor and Sypha's kid Richter Belmont!

It's going to shift in either the second or third episode. I have zero faith in it, because Smith has been caught lying about his interest in this franchise multiple times.

Here's what I think is going to happen:

King Randor is going to be critically injured, prompting Skeletor to feel more free to assault Grayskull. At some point, Adam has to transform into He-Man in a way that reveals his secret identity. Then, there's going to be a battle, and through some trickery/stroke of luck, Skeletor is going to gain control of the Power Sword and become "Skelegod" (since that was already spoiled via the new toyline), and The Sorceress will be killed.

This will lead to the Heroic Warriors being scattered and enemies of Skelegod's new order. He-Man will likely be MIA. Teela, Orko, Evil-Lyn (who will defect because it sues her purposes) will go on a quest to try and defeat Skelegod while Teela discovers her destiny to become the new Sorceress.

Skelegod will send various enemies to track and kill them (Mer-Man, Scareglow, etc).

This is partially written by the same guy who wrote the Transformers Trilogy currently on Netflix. That sucked, so I have no faith in this.

It's possible Smith saw an episode or two as a kid, he was around 12 or so by the time the show aired which is more than I can say for nolle Stevenson who was born the year the new he man adventures aired.

Speaking of as bad as this may be I think it's safe to say it can't get any worse than nu-ra, the people behind that show knew next to nothing about the source material nor did they care... Like at all they didn't even pretend to care.

Nolle and Co say an opportunity to voice their ball brained opinions and piss off fans of the original to stir up internet drama and they took it.

Yeah, that was just.......a weird choice from Dreamworks to commission her to do it. It seems they'll intentionally avoid real fans of this property in order to pump stuff out.

DON'T TEMPT THEM!

I'd be bold enough to say this applies to all but three people that have worked on that property over the past three years: James Eatock, Penny Dreadful, and Eric Marshalls.

Nolle and Co say an opportunity to voice their ball brained opinions and piss off fans of the original to stir up internet drama and they took it.

All of that was between bizarre and grossly unprofessional. Mocking the voice actor of Bow was a low point too, considering he was a classically trained actor. I actually read Noelle's memoirs book. I can't look at her and think 100% malice; she's clearly a very hurt, broken person. I don't care for what she did to She-Ra, but I can't bring myself to hate her.

The season finale of Final Space aired tonight, and we in on a definite darkest point in the overall story. Ash is fully corrupted, Mooncake is captured by Invictus and has broken into the main universe. Given that there seems to be some doubt on if it’ll get its last two season or not, I really hope to get some kind of closure with the series. It’s something I’ve really enjoyed.

I remember he was getting canceled for saying they can't have a character in a hijab because that would be a political statement (American manchildren doesn't seem to realize France has a different political stance on Arabs).

Relevant to the discussion, but I noticed the "reformed bully" trope is becoming overused, and sometimes it bears unfortunate implications. There's this character Amity from Owl House whom some fans are accusing of being a creator's pet. She was basically just Ethel Hallow but because the show has a shitty pacing she becomes sympathetic in the next episode she appears in. I think her relationship with Luz is fine, but she was actively bullying another girl, Willow, until it was revealed they used to be best friends before Amity stared bullying her to protect her from her parents. And this part annoys me because while kids don't become bullies out of nowhere, it's not a healthy message to teach little kids that if your best friend suddenly becomes abusive, they must have a good reason for it. But Amity is given a pass because she's a lesbian.
