I feel this mirrors what Ted was describing with surrogate activities in somewhat similar ways to what this podcast is describing as an over saturation of fake elites and a hyper competitive job market for those with degrees which produces resentment and rage against the system when jobs have 200 applicants but only one position, it’s quite interesting. I stumbled on it and was compelled to listen the whole way through. It sounds like a reasonable connection of dots pointing to where this flurry of activity we are seeing in the culture is coming from. I consider myself to be nominally on the left but I like to use critical thinking and try to look at different perspectives.

Edit: From personal experience I remember how educators used to always say you don’t want to be stuck working at McDonalds so you all need a degree to get a good job. Looking back now I despise that snobbish attitude, not everyone needs to be getting a degree and people shouldn’t be told they are any less if they don’t, it is one of the last openly acceptable forms of prejudice in society IMO. Ironically China the world’s factory is lacking blue collar workers now because they also pushed the same stigma about low status labour and now young students are being let down being told to become blue collar workers after having struggled for their degrees. It’s actually triggering mass protests from young students who have had their white collar degrees merged with trades.
