"Cultural Marxism" is very similar to "Alt-Right", it just means "Thing that I disagree with politically yet can't be bothered to understand, but I'll screech about it anyway". It's a boogeyman shorthand for basically nothing at all. Whilst "Cultural Marxism", like "Alt-Right", does have a meaning, i.e. a movement or set of beliefs that believe that popular culture should be used to spread class consciousness, I've never seen it used correctly by the people complaining about it. Putting black characters in media in places where they make no sense or having the speedrunning community full of Trannies has nothing to do with Marxism at all.

Most of the Progressive left that we see in the media, politics and culture is nothing to do with Marxism. Intersectionality itself is fundamentally in opposition to Marxism. Marxism sees economic and social class as the only meaningful distinctions between people. Intersectional Theory (the SJW ideology if you like) doesn't care about class at all, largely because its proponents are the kinds of bourgeois privileged classes that proper Marxists would put up against the wall the first chance they got. Many hardcore Marxists these days see the Progressive obsession with race, gender, sexuality, disability and all the rest to be at best a distraction from the real problem and at worst as a deliberate attempt by (((Capital))) to divide and conquer the Left. We tear ourselves apart about whether Harry Potter is transphobic while Goldman Sachs fucks the 99% with a giant dick made of money.

In short it's a school of cultural deconstruction/critics from the early-mid 20th century. One of the inspirations for the 60s era post-marxist schools that in a way still exist in academia. You can thank a lot of critical *insert thing here* theories/studies to it. In general it was about communists at the time analyzing what they have messed up in Germany in particular, considering they had a country ripe for a communist revolution and Hitler just pranked them.

In general it's deconstructing already existing social forms, because the proletariat is usually more conservative than the urbanite elites who pushes these kind of ideologies. Around those times they concluded that the university attending youth is a more potent revolutionary force than the workers, who actually have lives and an interest in keeping up the current system and forms of society.

Intersectionality is a building on that, if you liberate all the marginalized groups you could in theory use them against the majority.
Of course at that point it's not even about Marx's libertarian utopia but just permanent revolution forever. If the activist actually win/fix the issues they talk about they would be obsolete and couldn't make a living.

I heard that term being used in my literature classes back in college. The way my professors defined cultural Marxism was that it examined the class and cultural upbringings of each character in the story and how that affects the way they navigate the setting and how they interact with others. Basically just a deeper examination of a character's social status and the way they perceive the world.

It's not that bad of an idea for analyzing a story, especially stories that revolve around different social structures and characters from different upbringings. It's the name I get hung up on; the word "Marixsm" is going to cause a knee-jerk reaction with people, especially those who disagree with Marx (I know I had one). Something funny I've noticed is that both SJWs and Anti-SJWs generally join these movements so they can do good or have some meaning in their lives, while others are either simply looking for communities or are just grifters looking for clout.
