To be honest, I didn't watch the movie yet so they might have a point as far as I know. However, it's noted in an interview that the friendship between the two lead characters is inspired by the creator own experience as a child which is why I doubt there's any intentional romantic subtext between the two boys. Honestly, I wouldn't mind some puppy love between two kids characters of the same sex but the way these people talk about it often feels too sexual. In a comment on the video I linked, someone quoted the character being told to not put things in his mouth as a proof that he's gay.

I'm glad for that, I miss the days of people of the same sex being able to just be friends/have adventures together without people being all 'they're super duper gay, guys!' For example, Stand By Me is one of my favourite movies, but i fear if it was made today, people would be shipping the boys together or something.

You're assuming the fujos can tell the difference. I remember Tumblr friends gushing about the slash ship of the week, and every time I'd say their "evidence" just sounded like normal friendship stuff they'd be like "no you just don't get it because you're not watching/reading/playing it!"
