I’m always waiting for the moment when it gets so bad for woolie that he just on stream says fuck it and actually asks his viewers what they want to see instead of his ass backward I’ll play what I want but get mad when no one gives a shit about it style and when he’ll actually realize that the only people who give a shit about fighting games don’t watch stuff about fighting games because they’re already in. it’s a stagnating genre if Max can’t bring it back why the fuck does woolie think he can

It basically increases your range of serviceable connections by a good thousand miles, so it's not fair to say that it's irrelevant even if you live in a place with good infrastructure (you'll have, say, 2000 players available to you instead of 1000). But fuck me if it's not fucking tiring to hear people sperging out about rollback nonstop for the last couple of years. I can only imagine how painful it would be to hear Woolie regurgitate the contents of the first sentence of this post for a whole hour.
 
I think they should stop talking about netcode for fighting games because fighting games haven't been fun to play for well over a decade and have in general been in the decline for 25 years, they might as well talk about the upcoming NBC sitcoms for an hour a podcast while they're at it. SFV is not great, Tekken 7 is good but definitely showing it's age, Smash Ult is "not a fighting game" and literally every other fighting game comes out and the "scene" lasts for like 6 months and then it dies horribly (Soul Calibur, every NRS game, GG Strive, most ArcSys games).

Netcode is just the bandaid for the FGC, the real issue is the community is shrinking horribly and no company has any idea on how to fix it. Competitive games have drastically changed (Battle Royale games, "party" games, DOTA style games, MMO Arenas, etc) and the FGC's major change in several decades has been "some of the games are 2v2 or 3v3, some of the characters have a super meter". Most FGs are designed with eSports in mind which ironically makes them less fun to play and watch. The ideal place for fighting games is, as it always was, is at a friends house and not over the internet (or an Arcade). It is a genre that drastically needs a breath of life and it doesn't look like it's going to get it ever.

This is the same kind of mentality that thinks if a game doesn't sell Call of Duty numbers nor is the hot topic among zoomers, it's a failure and wasn't even worth trying. Fighting games don't need a "breath of life", their nature as a 1v1 game is in itself a major gatekeeper. If you lose, it's because you suck and your opponent was better. There are no coping mechanics to fall back on other than the cope you make in your own mind, and that alone is a huge barrier to entry for newbies. If you want to become good at fighting games, at least some degree of self-reflection is required and most normies don't even have an inner voice (allegedly).

What fighting games need are strong communities; a good netcode basically expands that community with literally no downsides. It's not irrelevant, good online is the bare minimum a game needs if it wants a community in the modern age.

Sure fighting games might not have the audience of a big normie release such as fornite or minecraft, but it being niche doesn't mean it's dying in any way. In fact, despite what you say, Tekken is still very popular, DBFZ had it's biggest concurrent playerbase since launch (a full 3 years ago, mind you), and Strive just came out a few weeks ago to 30000 players on steam alone. Fighting games are not by any means dying.

Rollback isn't a bandaid fix, it's something that allows people to actually play the game online with people that aren't close to you. If you were to try to play a fighting game with someone coast-to-coast on delay based netcode you simply won't be able to. It is unplayable. Rollback doesn't make miracles but allows for people with a stable connection to play from the US all the way to Europe or Japan even.

That being said, Woolie really shouldn't keep talking about it on the podcast. At least not so often. The people that listen to it already know from the other 100 times he has talked about it.

Fighting games not being relevant is why netcode is EXTRA important because you don't have 2691628 random assholes from your city playing the game online at any given moment. Of course, you're not obliged to care about them but some people still do and the netcode issue is totally valid.

And you're saying that the genre needs a breath of fresh air because it is all about the outdated practice of playing offline but also dismissing the biggest advancement in the netcode. What kind of logic is that?

Fighting Games are a "failure" because the new games should be better and more innovative than the old ones, not worse. Strong communities aren't going to form around mediocre games.

Losing in a fighting game (a modern one) isn't about self-reflection - it's about literal comeback mechanics. Rage Mode in Tekken, the Ultra meter in SF4, the V-Trigger in SF5 that all reward bad play. It's about a marked shift from a "neutral" style in older games to "rushdown" in modern ones, with a deeper focus on offensive options and a loss of defensive ones. Games being changed to be more "exciting" and away from being more "fair" is pretty central to the decline of the genre and has 0 to do with netcode.

Netcode is important, you're right, but it's still a bandaid. It doesn't matter how good the netcode is if you're making a game that people don't want to play or play often. Do you think there's a huge EX Layer community still (if there ever was?). Soul Calibur 6? Samurai Showdown? Any of the Persona Ultimax Games or BBTag?

Strive is just the "new thing" that's going to be fully dead in a year or two and mostly dead in 3 to 6 months. I'm glad DBFZ is popular, but I'd have to imagine a lot of that success comes from MVC3/MVCI being not very good.

I'm not saying that every Fighting Game needs to be Fortnite/Minecraft, but I think it's a bit out of sorts to say "this entire genre needs no innovation". There's a pretty clear reason that when you ask someone to tell you what their favorite fighting game is - it's usually an older one (Third Strike, Soul Calibur 2, Tekken 3, Marvel vs Capcom 2, SF2 Turbo, or something else).

Older games can't carry the genre (and they clearly have a shelf life) and the newer games are missing the mark - regardless of the netcode involved. In a perfect world - we'd have really good games with really good netcode, but I think the core game is much more important.
