They neutralized him until they could crack his Dead Man's Switch. They did the exact same thing to Assange. Made sure he was locked up in the embassy until they could crack the code, and as soon as they did, they stormed in and arrested him.

Wiki says he hanged himself, which is doable in pretty much any prison with blankets. Doubt he was ever considered a risk, tax fraud isn't really something that lands you in the Supermax, so minimum security was more likely, not delving into any conspiracies, as per usual.

There's no doubt the government is shady, but they aren't that stupid. The US government does a lot better job of making that shit less obvious. Like I said, you want him dead and to not look suspicious? Just have him freed because of sufficient evidence or something, then have some local gang kill him. He had a lot of enemies, so it would look less suspicious. If an autist like me can think of an easier and less obvious plan, the government can do a lot better job
