It's nowhere near October, but one ensemble is already on track to be named the most controversial Halloween costume of 2015.

Social media users were out in full force on Monday criticizing several Halloween retailers for offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume reminiscent of the former-athlete's Vanity Fair cover earlier this year.

While Jenner's supporters condemned the costume as "transphobic" and "disgusting" on Twitter, Spirit Halloween, a retailer that carries the costume, defended the getup.

"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. "We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."

Heavy facial hair is the best shorthand for "This is an intentional joke and not just another unpassable tranny".

Those two things aren't mutually exclusive. Besides, if it's meant to be a joke and not outrage bait, it's being made in very poor taste, and will only be funny to people who actually find the "butch, unshaven male in a wig and a dress" caricature amusing.

It's a dumb Halloween costume, who gives a shit.

That said, it's definitely meant to be outrage bait to an extent. Doesn't mean it also can't be a joke.

I'm totally buying this. Except I'm going to wear the sash over a white tank top and the bottom half of an orange jumpsuit. Might have blood dripping out of my mouth too.

I find that amusing. So do a lot of people. That's why it shows up a lot in comedy.

I'm sure they had plenty of models who they could've photographed with this outfit on, and that the hairy guy with the unshaven face and arm tattoo wasn't the only choice they had. This isn't homage, this is outrage bait.

When did it become so wrong to laugh at ugly trannys?

Bruce Jenner was an Olympic athlete at one point so he deserves respect for that.

But for the past few decades or so his only "job" has been for people to watch his boring existence. The dude killed a women yet because he dresses up like a women he's some "superhero" we can't take cracks at?

A real innocent woman who died is much less important than some dude who chopped his dick off and his struggle with his waning fame.

I don't give a shit about Bruce Jenner in particular. Like, with the argument you're making, swap transgenderism with race and it's a lot less funny.

Like if people made watermelon and fried chicken jokes about OJ or Ike Turner, people would get offended too. Not because they're not extremely shitty people, but because those kind of jokes are unacceptable for anyone.

A couple years ago I was Casey Anthony. I wore my orange scrubs with "Florida State Penitentiary" painted on it and I carried around a bloodied baby girl doll. People laughed, people said "that's fucked up" while laughing. That is a million times more in poor taste than this.
Jenner actually has a good sense of humor. A few years ago Bruce Jenner did an episode for CBS's I Get That A Lot, where he* basically pretended he wasn't Bruce Jenner, and cracked jokes about him the whole time.

*Yeah, I'm still confused on pronouns, I use she now, but I use he when I talk about the past. Like, "He won an Olympic gold medal," but "she's way hotter than her ex-wife"

Oh no, an offensive Halloween costume.

I better add this to the "When I Give A Fuck About Halloween Costumes" file, right alongside the Barack Obama costume, the Drunk Mexican costume, the Underage Lolita costume, the Child Dresses up like a Slasher Movie villain costume, the Giant Penis costume, the Dark Africa Savage costume, the Hong Kong Yellowman costume, annnnd the How, I'm An Injun costume.

Gosh, my candy corns are all a rustled now.

The types of people who would wear that are the same types of people who show up to Halloween parties as a "Full Body Inspector" or a giant tampon. Nothing to see here.

Men dressing as women is funny. If we're to be expected to accept transwomen unquestioningly and in all ways to be 100% legitimate women, men dressing as them is funny.
That's retarded. That's ignoring all the real challenges there are to changing your gender. That's like setting all the slaves free (into extreme poverty, of course) and saying "we're good, right?".

I'm not saying changing your gender should be without challenges. There are some very reasonable challenges to it. But completely ignoring those challenges with an issue like this? That's just goofy.
See that makes sense, but certain types of people are of the opinion that if they don't like it, nobody should be allowed to buy it, and it shouldn't exist and that it ever existed at all should be purged from our collective consciousness.
I don't think anyone important is actually proposing legal action. Most of the respectable people are just proposing a boycott, which is completely reasonable.
