just a reminder to everyone that can be arsed to even read what the anon "friend" posted, he specifically says that they had met in person in akihabara. it is pretty ridiculous to think that they couldn't have called the police while the call was happening.

I'm calling bullshit to be perfectly honest. I can't imagine anyone calling themselves a friend that knew him in person would write a letter like this basically saying "whelp, he's dead, no need to investigate further"

also this is a comment from an Xbox homebrew server I regularly post in. I have no reason to distrust what he is saying, but the fact that he got this info directly from near is what makes me question if it was an event that even happened.

What percentage of people working in tech, especially programmers, is messed up in the head? Seriously. It seems like a lot.

Isn’t it weird how these people tend to have multiple issues at once? Trans, autistic, furry, pedo, TDS, depressed, suicidal. Just what are the odds? It’s not even just him. It’s almost seems like a subculture for the ultimate social rejects.

It's because most tech people are shut ins, their jobs aren't especially social because they don't need to be around others to code, it's usually a lonely job (Unless you work in a software house) and it's bound to make you go schitzo unless you also have a social life to balance it out

The only way I survive doing a tech job is because I have a social life away from it.

It seems like a lot, but perhaps it's only small percentage since so many people work in tech these days? I have no idea. All the people I know personally who work in programming/tech are normies with families who love Dilbert. But that's not what I see online.

Ordinary, well-adjusted human brains are not suited for "system worship" like decades upon decades of coding. People who throw themselves into code are virtually always very autistic.
And neuroses like autism tend to be comorbid with others like gender dysphoria, homosexuality, etc.


This is confounded by the fact that autists are extremely impressionable and tend to be social lepers, so a tiny group of very forceful people, who will also be your friend as long as you play along with their fetish (eg. transgenders, furries, pedophiles) is like something tailor-made to corrupt autists.

They can call the Embassy, The American Citizens services or the US State Dept if they really wanted to.
Some of his supposed "friends" had mailing address for him, a first name, a locale for his address, a vague DOB and his telephone number, who he's worked for etc.
One tiny bit of that information is enough for the appropriate authorities to track him down. He has to be registered for a Zairyu card since he's an American so his information is in a database already. If and when he turns up dead, his death has to be registered with the US State Dept to dispose of his corpse.

They can call the above places with that information - they can even call the After Hours service if they're really worried.
The local police will unlikely do a wellness check even if they have all the information, you still have to go through the above services, but it's perfectly doable if they remotely gave a shit.

I don't get why having threads on someone = harassment, if that's the case sites like Reddit and Youtube are the biggest harassment site than Kiwifarms could ever dream of. Youtube channels like Fredrik Knudsen would also be classified as harassment channels under their logic.

I understand people find this site in bad taste and have many issues with Kiwfarms and what the users post, but if you are going to go after Kiwifarms don't make shit up like it's a harassment site, especially if you are part of a site like Resetera which has harassed a number of people.

Near, perhaps best known as the creator of BSNES and higan, has died. Word of their passing came from a poignant letter, authored by a close friend. They were the victim of relentless, unflinching cyberbullying.

A true purveyor of video game emulation and preservation, Near was an absolutely brilliant programmer... and a wonderful, kind and caring human-being. I was fortunate to work with Near earlier this year. After we secured Rockman EXE: Phantom of Network and Rockman EXE: Legend of Network, they joined the preservation team to assist with emulation. Near strove to get these Japan-only, mobile-exclusive titles up and running on PC.

Near supported and shared in our cause to preserve and distribute these two games with Mega Man fans everywhere. We will not soon forget their efforts -- no one will. This is a tremendous loss.

My thoughts go out to Near's family, friends and colleagues.

Brian Austrin, the guy who writes the blog, always seemed like a cool enough dude to me. He doesn't bring politics into his shit, just posts Mega Man news and helps preserve old Mega Man prototypes by releasing them on the blog. So I'm disappointed that he's running with this story without anything resembling an actual confirmation that Near is dead, just a fucking Google Doc made by someone who said they were on the phone with him until some French song started playing and Near stooped talking. He never so much as hints at going to Near's place and finding a dead body.
