Good grief, I'm seeing this story pop up in so many unexpected places. I just paid a casual visit to Rockman Corner, a Mega Man news blog I follow, and saw this: https://www.rockman-corner.com/2021/06/near-member-of-rockman-exe-phantom-of.html

Brian Austrin, the guy who writes the blog, always seemed like a cool enough dude to me. He doesn't bring politics into his shit, just posts Mega Man news and helps preserve old Mega Man prototypes by releasing them on the blog. So I'm disappointed that he's running with this story without anything resembling an actual confirmation that Near is dead, just a fucking Google Doc made by someone who said they were on the phone with him until some French song started playing and Near stooped talking. He never so much as hints at going to Near's place and finding a dead body.

People love the narrative of the poor, innocent loser who was bullied by anonymous internet meanies until he committed suicide. It draws a neat morality line, and the dead party is firmly on the "good" side of it -- he didn't do anything wrong, he was just a victim. It's easy to digest.

They're not willing to accept the messy reality that while somebody who made something that benefitted many is possibly dead, he was simultaneously broken in a way that nobody could help, and also not a very good person as he purposely orchestrated his "death" in a way to cause others unnecessary chaos. And that the "anonymous internet meanies", while they obviously weren't exactly Mother Theresa, weren't doing much more than gossping about him in another room.
