That wasn't the widow, iirc. That was some acquaintance. Suffice it to say that Waite's overindulgence in substances was a known and frequent thing and that it had happened before often enough that the person aware of the OD really shouldn't be blamed for innocently thinking this was yet another event she would sleep off without great harm.
