it is probably somewhere on this thread..but I'm lazy... has anyone seen Cartoon Networks: "Mystery Inc?" Its a two season incarnation of Scooby doo with... GOOD writing and a storyline...AND character depth and growth... in Scooby Doo. I"m not kidding.

PS, i FUCKING HATE SCOOBY DOO.. but I love this

basically the director said the movie is about friendship only and it was based on his childhood, and now these manchildren with blogs are cancelling him. Nevermind the actual kids don't care about that shit.

eh... Season 1 is good, season 2 went full LOST and completely ruined the humour and mystery to me.
tl;dr turns out all the villains were evil because of some alien and defeating him created a cosmic retcon reviving all dead characters and making everyone nice and happy and Velma is a lesbian. It's implied the ending is a prequel to the original show, so I guess having a Scooby doo with good writing isn't such a good idea because you'll write yourself into a corner. But yeah, I overall enjoyed their admittedly cynical take on the franchise.

I don't think they went "Lost" at all. The second season was a stronger story arc.. leaving the humor behind and focusing on the actual character stuff.. They did leave it open for a season 3.. which I would have loved to seen where they went with that... but I still love both season.

There actually was a weird period in the late-90s/early 00s when Hanna-Barbera properties were being branded under the Cartoon Network label, despite the fact that the boomers who watched these shows didn't know what a Cartoon Network was:

Nickelodeon had a few decent shows at that time. CatDog, Spongebob Squarepants, ChalkZone, Rocko's Modern Life. These are standoffs for me. I would say Cartoon Network had the edge over Nickelodeon. Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, Ed Edd n' Eddy, Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack. I found myself watching more CN than Nick.

That's not even going over their co-channel, Boomerang or their Adult Swim channel block. Nickelodeon felt too "safe" and formulaic. With CN, you didn't know what you would get.

Much as I did like a lot of Cartoon Network's lineup, OG Spongebob will always hold a special place for me. Everything about the first three seasons and the first movie was golden to me.

Hey Arnold is also a show I don't think gets enough credit. That show tackled so many issues with a sense of maturity and respect. Whether it be Helga's home situation, Harold's weight issues, Stinky not putting up with TV executives disrespecting him even if it means losing out on a lot of money, Mr. Potts learning to respect himself when it comes to women and his height ect.

It's just kind of a shame the titular character himself is just so bland and doesn't get to do a whole lot throughout the show. Especially after the first season or so where they stopped even trying having episodes focused on him. In a way though, it worked out in its favor.

I recall one homeless character that relied on birds for company. Or one episode where there was a gaping hole in the street and the city just put a board over it. Hey Arnold is an underrated cartoon with its subject matter. I cannot recall another children's show which setting is urban.

City life is often ignored because of its grit. And dare I say, Hey Arnold I consider to be actually progressive.

In many ways, the cartoons 90s and 00s could be more progressive than many of the cartoons of today. The difference is that not only did it come off as more natural but it was never in your face about it nor did the creators smugly pat themselves on the back for it.

On the subject of Nick vs CN in the 90s and 00s, that’s a tough call since there were periods were one reigned over the other. Nick had the early 90s, CN had a slight edge in the late 90s, both were roughly on the same level in early 00s, and both went to pots in the late 00s. Plus I have a special place in my heart for the Toon Disney/Disney Channel cartoons of that same time period.

When dumb Twitter tranoids smugly retort with “x has ALWAYS been political! *AGP smirk*” you have to remember that politics != virtue signaling woke-pandering propaganda.

You can tell the difference between which is which because one will just be a thing that exists in the story, while with the other the creators will be DESPERATE to make it clear how STUNNING AND BRAVE it was for them to address such socially conscious issues in their fucking kid’s cartoon. One’s about imparting a message about the creator’s beliefs; the other’s about imparting a message about what a good and virtuous comrade the author is.
