Yeah, I'm a big fan of Berserk, but that type of argument is pretty weak. People regularly stick to things from their childhood. Not to mention the fact that some things just appeal to people, and they just stick with it. I don't think people have to justify everything they like. The issue with the DB fandom isn't that they like a poorly-written shonen; it's that they're mentally stunted morons.

Also, Berserk isn't good because it's "dark and gritty with all the sex and violence", it's good because the story is solid, the characters make sense, and it was done by an extremely skilled draftsman.

That's what I was trying to say, anime and manga aimed at an older audience often simply offers more in the way of story and characters.

But on the flipside to that, if you're just looking for entertainment, stuff aimed at an older audience offers more in the way of that in my opinion.

Of course I get childhood nostalgia and all that.

I was quite hard on Dragon Ball in my earlier post as well, but I'm pretty sure most people in the thread don't actually really hate Dragon Ball. I for one quite enjoyed the original Dragon Ball anime and thought it was something sufficiently entertaining to put on and just turn off your brain to. If you enjoy the franchise, good on you, almost no one is gonna blame you for that. My biggest problem with it isn't that it's a "dumb" shounen that's not "mature enough for my refined tastes" or that there isn't much depth to it, my main problem with it when I tried to watch it was the pacing, and how you could cut out 90% of the time-wasting screaming, charging up, and internal monologuing and you would have a way more tolerable show. It obviously helps having some sort of previous relationship with the show, like if you grew up on it you're gonna have nostalgia for it and be willing to overlook it's flaws when you watch it now. Most people trying to get into Dragon Ball in the current year with no previous relationship to it are gonna find it way harder to watch.

I liked it as a kid but for me personally it was just a gateway into the wider world of anime that I never saw much point in going back to.

That's what made DBZ charming though.

I have the Orange Funimation boxsets that has the original versions "cleaned-up", and the episodes on those are WAY LONGER than what was aired on TV, even before DBZKai. Right from the very first episode, your introduced to "Gohan's Lackluster Adventure In The Woods" before Raditz starts fucking shit up.

If you're gonna watch it, I recommend getting the Dragon Box sets over all other copies. The Level sets are good remasters but they're rare, expensive & were deliberately given additional film grain to look "authentic", essentially ruining it anyway. The Dragon Box sets are DBZ but unadulterated with any shitty remade scenes, cropped aspect ratio or artificially added noise.

Remember, the orange bricks are shit, yellow bricks are good.

Also be aware that there's lots of filler in the show as it was made side-by-side with the manga, so the manga might be a better choice for you overall as it's a much more lean experience.
