Closed Species - Pay $500 to draw a bedazzled fox

Chimereons, the species by Seelnose? If so, then do tell.
I know for a while Seelnose has on their account not to message them about Chimereon related stuff despite them being the creator and "big boss" of the group. I don't quite understand why they don't want to be messaged about one of their sources of income. Idk.

Recently, a temporary change has been made to implement raffles to the bimonthly MYO events. Instead of a user trying to be the first to reply to a mod's comment on the journal soon as the slots open (it's a timer) then you may get a slot. Despite a hundred people who may comment at the same time as you. Only counting the first comment they receive, and even then, it's only twenty slots available. Ten AO (already owners) and ten FTO (First time owners. Keep in mind, even if you win the slot, you still have to pay. I was in the comments asking if it were possible to increase the chances for people and have twelve slots for each type of rarity of chimereon. People started agreeing with me in the comments and the mods started deleting comments and complaining it would be too much work to fill up the masterlist of 3000+ designs present already.

I will never understand the way these people type up their “Terms of Service”. Bro you’re selling an item. If I want to call it a “slur” then I’m going to because it’s a drawing. What are you gonna do? Take it back? Oh no. How dreadful. You can’t physically take it so why would anyone be scared? I'd love to see someone try to sue over something like that. But really what they mean is if they don't like you they'll sell the same pixels to someone else for full price.

It's a cool design, but the problem is, no commission taker will want to draw all that. Characters have to be. Somewhat simple
If you're even allowed to get commissions of the character, and that doesn't violate some gay clause of the TOS which will get you exiled from the beanie baby- err, online art community.

imagine getting a commission and this is the character you have to draw
I'm not desperate enough for commissions to do that character. I can't make heads or tails of it!
I'd charge them another 1k but instead, it's £1000 so they can pay the difference in currency as interest for making me figure out such an ugly design...if they're smooth brained enough to go for it.

Would you sell your soul for 1000 pounds?

In all seriousness if someone's forking out a grand for that, they're most certainly dumb enough to fork out another grand

Lol. I wanna rip one off and call it “Nigger Lou”

Are we sure the bidders aren't just the original artist with multiple accounts and similar art styles? I'm looking at the bidders, and the first bidder Sacchin has similar concepts and art styles when compared to Zoomutt.

(Sacchin on left, zoomutt on right).
Additionally, zoomutt has a history of copying others' art styles.

There was a popular Pokemon fansite known as Suta-Raito by Kuitsuku. Kuitsuku had very similar art in terms of lineweight, color, and shading/lighting. Unfortunately, much of Kuitsuku's artwork seems to have been lost after they took down their website. This is one that demonstrates what I mean. With those specific line highlights. Kuitsuku was the pioneer of this art style; she was very popular on deviantART a decade ago.

It might not seem like too similar a style, but a lot of Kuitsuku's older works (older than what I posted) carried that art style. Kuitsuku's older art also had those anime eyes that were in zoomutt's art. Would it be too wild to speculate that these people might be the same person under different accounts, posting art with slightly different art styles, bidding on their own art to make their auctions appear more popular and desired than they actually are (causing people to bid on something they normally wouldn't due to the illusion of artificial scarcity/coveting)? Other artists have done this in the past, including PurpleKecleon/GlitchedPuppet, another Pokemon fan. This is all just speculation and probably wrong as I don't have time to look further into the individual accounts in terms of personal history.

Yes. As a member of the Stygians community, I can confirm that Sacchim, Zoomutt, and any other artist you might pick out of the bunch are completely different people. Much of the art you chose to speculate on is older, and one of your examples is from a different artist entirely. The artist behind this piece is porkbun, and the reason it was posted to Zoomutt's account in the first place is because Zoo runs the Stygians ARPG from there. Her account can look confusing from a glance because of this, but she always gives credit to the artist in the description of the post.

I would also like to point out that the Pokémon art you posted is quite literally from 2005. 16 years ago, when everyone on deviantART was doing the exact same thing and drawing in a similar style. Zoo was barely a teen at the time this was posted, and she talks about this period in her life relatively often in the ARPG server. The artwork you chose for Sacchim is also from 2015, and their recent art is far different than anything Zoomutt has posted. The concepts are similar mostly as a matter of coincidence and, I hate to throw around this word so casually, but cherry-picking as well. I struggled to find the artwork you chose for your comparison (barring the pixels), but here (and here) they are in full. The first one (the spider) was from a free raffle, and Zoomutt usually sticks to a handful of aesthetics and palettes that she knows will appeal to the majority of the community, rather than something more specific.

These are her three most recent pieces of artwork, credited to three different members of the Stygians ARPG staff because they drafted the original concepts, and Zoo later finalized them for the auction. Here are some others, to cover a broader scope of designs and color palettes. For comparison, here are some Sacchim works from 2018 onwards. I hope the difference in style is more obvious with these examples laid out for comparison.

Also yes. Unfortunately, these bids are entirely serious, and all from different people — the highest bid is now $1200. The only thing that breaks from the usual auction flow is the massive leaps that Sacchim and Citrusssss took, starting the bidding at $500 and skyrocketing to $1000. A lot of the $100-500 and $500-$900 crowd (you can see them show up in other auctions, and they usually bid in $10-25 increments as is standard) were completely circumvented by this, hence the appearance of artificial inflation. Waschmittelpulver (as much as this thread loves to dunk on her, and for good reason) is an insanely popular artist in the community, and her designs are coveted by normal players and auction whales alike. And the worse thing?
:stress:
This is par for the course for a Wasch auction. The last one hit $2000, and recently, someone popped into the Discord server to incessantly spam the ad channel looking for a Wasch design and offering upwards of $3000. Otherwise, the current auction trend is actually starting to drop, and most auctions are barely hitting $1000 this time around; we moved out of "normal" sales into "premium" sales territory late last month (as the current event nears its end), and typically, "premium" sales net around $1500 each. People are sincerely willing to drop $2000 on this shit.

Thanks for the info. It is sad that people will spend this much on pixel art. Designs that could be copied and tailored to your liking (since they're eye-rapey as is, you could take away anything you don't like and it would be your own) instead of paying ridiculous amounts of money. Why do parents think it's OK to let their children run away without restraints on their credit cards.

I completely agree. As a side note, the userbase for the Stygians ARPG is actually older than most other closed species out there, with the general age range falling in the mid-20s and trending upwards. Minors are increasingly rare, and most get spooked by a bunch of older players being so active in the server. People are out there working full-time jobs and coming home to spend the majority of their expendable income on... pixels. At least it's profitable, I suppose.

The highest auction to my knowledge is the $4000 Child of Madness from January 2020. The design is so... cluttered.

Something I've wondered for a while about very busy, complicated designs is if the tendency tends to stem from how little so many furries care about character details that AREN'T visual and obvious. No ability to write an interesting character? Your fans have no attention span for it? The fandom has no idea how to subtly hint at layers of characterization beneath what the eye perceives, and no care for anything beyond visual stimulation? Well, fuck it then, just frontload absolutely anything of interest into the visual part of the character until it ends up being the artwork equivalent of Moby Dick fed through a shredder and thrown in fistfuls at a glued surface.

I feel this way about furry chars with tats.

I've thought about that scenario the other day and my family would be happy for me that I make 1k per picture but I won't be doing what I love and end up a husk in front of the computer.
