Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

Time for another Comicsgate News Update

FROM CREATORGO
Since our last CG News Update the number of CG crowdfunders increased from 104 to 111, not including the removed failed campaigns below. None of our previously watched campaigns have yet achieved funding, while three of the newly launched campaigns achieved funding with no new failures.

FROM KICKSTARTER AND INDIEGOGO
The biggest campaign to launch over the past week was the long anticipated Wave One of Cyberfrog toys from ALLCAPS Comics. The campaign features a modern Cyberfrog figure, 90s Cyberfrog figure, Heather Swain and a Vyzpzz figure with stretch goals adding articulated arm stands, extra heads, hands and weapon packs. The campaign has raised $207,889 from 920 backers with a 400K goal in it's first few days of funding.

Campaign

The big winner outside of CG crowdfunding in the past week was Timothy Lim with his Kamen America x Black Hops event which finished on Kickstarter with $102,351 from 2,280 backers. The crossover event between Lim's most prominent titles was the first Iconic Comics campaign to break six figures on a single crowdfunded campaign.

FROM THE TWITTERVERSE
Everybodies former favorite best boi Zack recently released a Youtube Community comment (which is now deleted) announcing a Jawbreakers One Shot centered around Knife Hand story.

jawb.jpg

Reception to the news was however mixed with The Lucent creator Michael Bancroft declaring that despite being CG because of Zack, he was done backing his projects.

The quote tweets and replies were full of other Comicsgate creators, Youtubers and backers who agreed and empathized with Bancroft's stance, the tweet would further trigger a flurry of videos which will be featured in our Youtube section.

FROM YOUTUBE
The first channel to give their reaction to the announcement of The Jawbreakers campaign was Leroi and his self pro-claimed "The Chat" crew. The normally vocal CG cheerleaders were clearly unhappy with the decision from Zack, with the panel and majority of the chat and comments expressing frustration with Zack and his continued launching of fresh campaigns while big ticket books, Jawbreakers and The Expendables, remain unfulfilled.

Comicsgate reporters DA Talks and VIKKIVERSE would briefly mention the subject on their weekly The Dumping Grounds stream. VIKKIVERSE and DA Talks noticed the irony of Bancroft launching a #ComicsgateFulfills campaign on twitter which was quickly torpedoed by Zack's recent decision. The other topics of the week were ongoing problems with Dynamite Comics and their fulfillment of books involving Billy Tucci and Art Thibert, the misunderstanding between HeelsvsBabyFace and FROG, the latest Comichron sales numbers and the recent Denial of Service attacks against the farms.

Leroi, The Chat and our aforementioned CG reporters weren't the only ones to comment on Richard's latest campaign announcement, as the one and only People's Champion The Patriot Hut, gave his opinion on the situation.

Feeling the heat and backlash from the recent announcement, the embattled Zack released a video explaining himself and his reasoning to critics and disgruntled backers. The comment section appears mixed with people who don't care and others who are clearly irritated by the decision.

After streaming with Dale Keown on his own channel, FROG made a surprise visit into the CG badlands on F Off Well Read's channel. Without mentioning Zack by name there was a discussion on everything from fulfillment and campaign etiquette, the Wave One Cyberfrog toys, the future of Comicsgate, the recent appearance of Shane Davis on the show and a variety of other topics. FROG joins Lord Finatra and Well Read at the [38:20] mark of the stream.

In mainstream news YellowFlash reports on the recent decision of Marvel to use Captain America to mock the American dream and flag, using this as a further justification for the domination of manga over woke western comics.

In a rare return to form, That Umbrella Guy put out a video once against analyzing the financial reports of IDW and the parasitical relationship between Marvel and IDW with allegations of lying to investors. Was Amber Heard involved? I guess we will have to wait and see as the situation develops.

This weeks most recommended video however comes from fellow kiwi and communist comic creator COMMI3 MARK. Commie Mark offered a rebuttal video to the recent assertions made by Preston Poulter ally Forced Adversity. Commie Mark expertly picks apart Forced Adversity's progressive claims in both an informative and comedic way complete with clips and historical examples. I highly encourage all kiwis and lurkers to check out the execution video and give Commie a sub.

Well that's our Comicsgate News Update for this week, the big news obviously being the recent Cyberfrog toy campaign and announcement from Simple Zack of his new Jawbreakers spin-off book. Zack's inability to read a room is quite concerning as even die-hard Comicsgaters are now openly expressing dissatisfaction with his business practices, something that was previously isolated to this thread and a handful of anti-CG Youtube channels. I'd also like to congratulate @COMMI3 MARK on his latest video and what was probably the best CG related video of the week. It was refreshing to see a short video moving away from the multi-hour livestream format that currently plagues CG which was informative, funny and had a great production quality. Keep making content like this and I'm sure your channel will quickly stand out from the competition.

As always take care and stay safe out there. :bluelabel:

What was your thinking behind the name "All CAPS"?

I don't have any issues with it, but am interested in getting an insight into how the name came about.
1. Everyone was calling my YouTube channel CAPS, short for Comic Artist Pro Secrets. So this would tie the crowdfunding to the social media promotion.

2. ALL CAPS would imply that my published work would be the culmination of everything I learned so far.

3. and then colloquially, using all caps means shouting, like a carnival barker? Or laughing? Having fun. The laughing man logo suggests all of that.

I really like it. It feels genuine and it feels like it happened naturally.

Is Pitt worth reading? The stream yesterday got me interested and I've always dismissed it as too 90's or something.

Dale Keown is someone I hope shows up on the livestreams more often. Hearing him talk shop about comics reminds me of when Mike first came on board and hearing all this history from first hand perspective. It's much better than Cecil bringing up French cartoons.

I also ask because it sounds like a Warts and All type thing could happen, or something original? Hopefully he becomes a regular on the streams.

For me it is. Pitt is the epitome of the 90’s so I’m not sure how you will like it But, it’s got plenty of action and some cool plot twists.

Sometimes. PITT is worth experiencing. The art is spectacular.

Keown will be producing at least one new PITT book, probably 48 pages. We'll see if he wants to do more. I'm also willing to do a collected edition, but he seems less interested in that.

Imagine your this guy asking questions on why some no name website is not asking for comic sales. :/

More to the point, who is Richard C Meyer to lecture anyone else about avoiding the word "Comicsgate"?

1625623848370.png

Since we're on the subject of Meyer, he announced the other day in a now erased community page post that he is going to be launching a new Jawbreakers spinoff, the asininely named "Knife-Hand: Blindspot" with a yet to be named artist. Attached is some preview art of the eponymous "Knifehand" shooting a lime green laser from his hand behind a abstract pile of pistachio, salmon, lavender and beige. Is it supposed to be a building? A wack-ass AT-ST? I still have no idea.

Why was the post taken down? It appears that this fifth campaign, while Jawbreakers: Grand Bizarre, Expendables: Go To Hell and Impossible Stars remain extremely late along with Rock N Roll Ninja still unfulfilled was a step too far, stretching beyond even the most devoted upholders of the Comicsgate faith.

1625623933600.png

Michael Bancroft, creator of The Lucent and probably the most active promoter of small campaigns in Comicsgate, has been trying to spread the hashtag #comicsgatefulfills around twitter. This finds himself in inevitable loggerheads with his non-fulfilling former inspiration. He says up front he's done backing his former inspiration; customers being asked to support a fifth project while three are overdue doesn't sound like the "customer first" mantra that Simple Zack droned on about what the mainstream needed to do in innumerable park benches and Walmart parking lots. Bancroft elaborates in this follow up reply:

1625623984788.png

This makes sense from Bancroft's perspective - when trying to promote untested, unproven small indie creators, that audience having hundreds and hundreds of dollars sunken into Meyer's various mismanaged, unfulfilled campaigns is counterintuitive, to say the least. Or, put another way, Bancroft will not financially support Meyer because Meyer's is a net-negative contribution towards the mission of indie comic crowdfunding.

Within the hour of Sensei Bancroft giving the greenlight, student Leroi launches this stream:

07/04/2021 - LEROI - WTF ZACK?

Leroi opens with his regulars of "The Chat", so named as they were selected from some of the regular participants of various Comiscgate youtube chats. As true Comicsgate faithful, they cannot believe this day has come for them to stage an intervention like Nasser and his "Smillerventions, with CG Jesus, Ya Boy Zack. The solemn assembled

  • Leroi - The showrunner and leader of the team
  • Amanda B: The circumspect one of the team, Amanda was also the author of the scathing 499 review here. Thanks for pointing that out @Rupin
  • DangerVanessa - Reborn as "Furious V", she is the one the rest of the panel turns to when they need someone to get loud and aggressive. Half-Sketch, half-Karen, Vanessa is the muscle of the team.
  • Lord Crackhead - Previously "Crackhead Jeremy" back before the Snyder fallout with Geeks and Gamers. Reads and interacts with the chat more than the other guys.
This is a tough moment for these nascent Comicsgate youtube activists. Tough but, as Crackhead says, necessary if Leroi is going to truly play his role as voice of the fans. After the obligatory listing of all the names in the chat and shouting them out, of course. Leroi presents today's topic of discussion - Zack is launching another book. By Vanessa's count, Expendables is on its fourth delivery date. Leroi's personal gripe was 499 and its bait-and-switch approach to coloring. The fans objected, but those objections were ignored - maybe the fan's voice isn't enough in this "customer movement" Leroi muses. Vanessa is less forgiving at Zack's policy of arbitrary, radical changes to his product like his "bullshit five color pallete" and just challenging the customer to refund their backing if they don't like whatever hot mess he's putting out this week. Crackhead voices his concerns with Meyer's business strategy of unannounced campaigns that aren't marketed and are either late or not what was originally sold - if not both - and his declining sales numbers back this up.

Leroi cuts off Crackhead to say that he doesn't care anymore about the welfare of Meyer's business, his concern is about the treatment of the fans and customers. "Zack has a special place in my heart" says Vanessa, but this is beyond ridiculous at this point. It's all frickin bullshit at this point. Expendables is "late and gay" at this point, IN JANUARY HE SAID EXPENDABLES IS FUCKING DONE. WHERE IS MY FUCKING BOOK? NOBODY CARES ABOUT ROCK N ROLL NINJA. LATE AND GAY. AND LOOK AT THIS ART, IT LOOKS LIKE A CHILD BOUGHT A WATERCOLOR KIT FROM WALMART. I'M SUPPOSED TO BE EXCITED ABOUT THIS SHIT? COME ON.

The rest of the panel starts to commiserate over this tragic change within Richard C Meyer, but is cut off as Vanessa starts ranting again about how she's got enough shit pissing her off in real life, she doesn't come here to get more bullshit modafoqa. Leroi gently prods Vanessa on how she really feels about this. Which Vanessa readily supplies for another 10 minutes until Leroi brings up his own grievance with the unasked for style change to 499 again. Prompted, Crackhead discusses how "over the last year" (I would argue much longer) that nothing Meyer doesn't look or sound or do anything reminiscent of a Comicsgater. He takes but gives nothing back in word or deed and often in product, his comics are late and gay and subject to him arbitrarily making them even shittier than what the customer already paid for without warning.

Joe Fulton, Bancroft's number two, joins to weigh in on this matter. Joe prefaces this by saying while he intends on being a creator, he's also backed 142 projects himself since Jawbeakers: Lost Souls. Meyer's actions make no sense to him as either a customer or a creator. It makes no sense to Leroi either, if this was someone like Aubrey Sitterson or Joe Glass, Zack would be making videos about this.

Next to join is Ed Winkler, creator of Sovereign Wolf, who arrives to say he has $1000 sunk in Meyer's campaigns and he's not going to put any more in until he starts seeing some return on that investment. As a customer, this is an injury and as a aspiring creator artist himself, this discourages customers from investing in him. Other Comicsgate creators like John Hervey, the Diaz Brothers, Chimera Comics, Art Thibert, Graham Nolan all get their work out on time.

The panel then takes a break to read the chat, which generally agrees with the sentiment expressed. This all soundsl like Meyer's "crowdfunding is dying" prediction is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Zack can do whatever he likes with what they're teliling him, but Vanessa wants him to know for that for every person like her or Leroi that says something, there's a lot more who agree but are silent - they'll just close their wallets and not say anything. Just look at Mitch Breitweiser and the Saints. Just when I think this stream can't get any more personally gratifying, Liam Gray shows up.

1625619380173.png

Liam asks where was all this sentiment, where was everyone in the panel when the Orange Koala was nailed to the cross for speaking this heresy, when Ro and Frog invited him to a livestream to complain about the SJWs and had an intervention? Crackhead takes exception to this - it's different this year compared to last year. Liam's complaints were ideological in nature, these complaints are strictly customer/creator in nature.

1625620047642.png

Leroi is the next to reply to Liam's claims of self-vindication, saying that there were all sorts of shit Liam did that pissed him off - specifically his steep discount on Xenotype's closeout. Vanessa and Leroi then close out the stream saying that they didn't want to talk about this, but for the integrity of the show as a platform for fans and fan concerns, they had no choice. And if they can't talk about this stuff in Comicsgate, what are people doing?

This was then followed by this video by Richard C Meyer

07/05/2021 - COMICS MATTER W/YA BOI ZACK - BLINDSPOT - WHY AM I ABOUT TO LAUNCH A KNIFE-HAND INDIEGOGO WHEN I'M LATE ON A FEW OTHER CAMPAIGNS?!?

First things first, Meyer explains why he's refunding the backers who optioned for the T-Shirt and signed floppies - the time needed to fulfill it wouldn't be worth it for him so he's just going to refund every backer.

The next thing to be disclosed to his audience/customer base is that he has found a solution to the tchotchkies and his secret fulfillment company's insistence on a "per-touch fee" value-added service business structure and getting out of - he will have all the tchotchkies mailed to his spare room and will then personally put an order's worth of fold-in posters, badges, bookmarks dog tags and whatever into a mylar bag, mail it back to the fulfillment company, and then the fulfillment company will charge a single fee for putting the mylar bag into the cardboard Gemini mailer, slashing his expenses by 4/5ths with this one move. Of course, it took a year of Jawbreakers being past its due date for Simple Zack to arrive at this solution. Which he says he'll get around to doing whenever. They've been sitting around at his place for at least 3 months

1625622761976.png

No rush.

Next is the subject of the headline - why is Richard putting out another crowdfund when he already has three that are far past overdue. He understand why the viewer may be upset. But you need to understand that his contribution towards these projects, including writing the script is about a day tops, a bit of news that should please nobody except Shane Davis (CAT PAPPY VINDICATED, COMIC BOOK WRITERS BTFO). Also the artist is already half-way done and that this in no way effects the fulfillment of his overdue projects. Absent is any consideration of the customer's perspective and why they would want to a back a fourth project when they're waiting on three other projects by the same person.

At the end of the day, Zack explains, it's simply against Zack's self-interest to wait until his outstanding obligations are met before collecting money for ventures he's already investing money in. And since Zack's self-interests are the only ones that matter, the complaints being leveled by these people* are simply irrational.

*unlike Heidi McDonald, who simply masks the name against searches, Zack bravely pretends Comicsgate simply doesn't exist

Re the new Zack book, I'm willing to buy his reasoning that he had the time to start up a new project. A comic is a collaborative project and there's time where he will have downtime while other people are doing their parts, so why not fill that downtime with a new project? But yeah, he probably should have considered the optics rather than getting excited and firing up his phone to make a new video about it. I bet if, in a few months, once his last overdue book is shipping, he then announced the new project he's been working on, it would have had a much softer reception.

We'll see if he wants to do more. I'm also willing to do a collected edition, but he seems less interested in that.
That's the feeling I got watching the show, hopefully both collected and an original book. Definitely backing whatever Keown puts out.

Sold. He did some Hulk stuff too, I have to go back and check out now.

I agree. Dale seems like a really cool guy and had a good stream presence. Solid first impression for me, which can't be said for every pro that has been on Ethan's stream. I hope he continues to show up. Doesn't hurt that he's an artist that I respect tremendously. I was never a huge Hulk fan, but I loved his stuff with Peter David. It's also cool that Dale was ready to roll and wanted to stream with a bunch of other CGers. I respect that Ethan didn't want to throw him into the deep end right away, though.

Very excited for new Dale Keown comics.

Should do one soon. I wasn't able to archive it in time but the Twitterati is on the case.

Liam R. McGuire (@LiamRMcGuire) tweeted some absolute bullshit in regards to Dale Keown joining comicsgate.

He's gone into protected mode and deleted the tweet in question. I wasn't able to archive it, maybe someone else did?
scrnli_7_6_2021_7-59-47 PM.png
Best I can do right now is a google search.

Basically he tweeted "It seems Dale Keown as joined ComicsG*te""

He also replied to someone hinting at letting Marvel know Keown was due a cancelling.

He's apparently a comics editor at ScreenRant and Non-Binary with the standard pronouns required of a twitter sjw. Basically what you'd expect.
scrnli_7_6_2021_7-51-18 PM.png

He also wrote this shit

scrnli_7_6_2021_8-28-01 PM.png

BTW its been 6 months since January and The Capitol made it into a Mainstream DC book?

EDIT - - -

Frog made a video covering this already complete with the tweets

What a fucking retard.

Truer words never spoken.

Oh good, it's not just me. I thought I was having an aneurism or something.

After 499 and this, what's Ricky going to try in the next comic? Assuming he has enough stans left to make another comic worthwhile. Cubism? Dadaism?

"The Chat", so named as they were selected from some of the regular participants of various Comiscgate youtube chats

The groupies formed their own band. This does not move me to personally discover what they have to say. I assume they started their own YouTube channel because it was cheaper than making $20 superchats every time they had a hot take.

@COMMI3 MARK had a great video. Now, make your videos sound louder and you are going straight for breaking bank as anti-breadtube.

I didn't pick up on CAPS being an acronym for Comic Artist Pro Secrets.

I also need to find a way to remove the hum of the nine million fans in my new computer. Its a work in progress obviously.

I know people rolled their eyes a couple of months ago when I said "I'm gonna try and go the JSG route" but I think it's starting to bare fruit now I've found how to put the Commi3 Mark twist on it.

Big thanks to @Mister Dongs and @Smug Freiza for the recent shout outs here. I only found Forced Adversity thanks to Smug Freiza last weekly update.

If anyone has more examples of cg crossing over with breadtube please send em my way.

What software are you using for video capturing. There are options (dehumm, noise gate, remove noise in audacity) to remove certain noise from your video's audio.
Go through some tutorial and you will hear the difference in your videos.
