Cow is better at following certain subjects. They keep a very active watch on RWS and ADF (especially before we had the current level of interest in him that we have now).

True, they tend to do it. But lets be honest, we have some very aggressive info gathers here and your setup allows long posts and info dumps to be more efficient than their board does.
Still, RWS watcher and Introman were very informative about ADF, and RWS is kind of a taboo here for good reason. We have taboos here that they don't. It effects coverage.
I am sure they are enjoying their new Entersphere thread.

Some stuff here is taboo, because the people involved are really really huge assholes. RWS is a level of psycho you really don't want to have to deal with and so are most of the taboo topics here.
Mon.sant.o brings in another crazy guy so we have to word filter that word. Monsanto is another thing that goes to a bad place.
It is less Orwellian, and more we don't want to bring these unique brand of crazy off the wall shitheads to the forum again.

True, but I think my point still stands. Without (even informally) imposing these taboos - limiting freedom of discussion - the freedom to have a decent place to discuss all other topics is diminished. So, restriction of discussion is necessary to maximize that which can be discussed well.
Or maybe I've had one too many gin and tonics...

The forum is not about freedom of speech. I sincerely enjoy my ability to say whatever I want to, and am doing what I feel is my part to ensure that others are able to do so even when oppressed, but the forum is private property. It is a medium sized board that is dedicated to weirdos. There is an atmosphere that is being cultivated. I don't expect Wikipedia to be about freedom of speech, it is about neutral speech and freedom of information. I don't expect StackOverflow to be allow me to append to my answers that 9/11 was an inside job. That doesn't mean that StackOverflow is oppressing me, that means that StackOverflow's modus operandi is non-inclusive of conspiracy theories.

For anyone interested in "Total freedom of speech", I advise you to power up your shields & cruise over to the 'chans and take a good long look at "/b" or "/baphomet". When you remove any constraints, all you end up with is a soup of shitposting, illegal shit, and people pasting bullseyes on one another. It's not "censorship" it's quality control.
As I've said before. The best thing about the internet? Anyone with a PC can say anything they like. The worst thing about the internet? Anyone with a PC can say anything they like.

I was (drunkenly) observing an interesting quirk in the successful management of a forum like this: that the imposition of taboos leads to a net increase in discussion possibilities, since without taboos you just become /b/
