The ones I have coming up either fail at absolutely everything in hilarious ways (get fired from job after job for years on end, tell absurd lies and wonder why their doctors don't believe them), are munchausen-by-proxy, or actually go the extra mile and make themselves ill to the point where they are going to die soon and we're just waiting to see which bad idea is going to be the deadly one. I changed the order of my florida road trip specifically to get the annoying activists out of the way because I didn't want to post them at all but had already done all the work.

I also have one going up that I think was a genuine Trevino patient who escaped and repented and has not gone back in several years, which is interesting mostly because i get asked all the time if I've ever seen someone recover.

Feldman’s original description of Munchausen-by-internet was old school catfish who used stolen photos and stolen stories, usually making up a character whole cloth. The most famous was probably Kaycee Nicole, a fictional teenager made up by a middle-aged woman, who faked phone calls between Kaycee concerned followers of her blog and was outed when she decided to kill Kaycee off. There wasn’t quite this phenomenon of people “identifying as disabled” in real life and documenting it online and AFAIK Feldman doesn’t like the term munchausen-by-internet being applied to them although I can’t for the life of me remember why.

I personally think I this is just an extension of idpol bullshit and if social media disappeared so would they. Covid tested and mostly proved this. So many of the people I followed stopped posting when wearing masks wasn’t special anymore, they couldn’t go out in public with their dogs, their doctors were too busy to indulge their bullshit, and going to the ER posed an actual health risk to them. The few still chugging along are either people who are nuts enough to keep giving themselves MRSA abscesses and sepsis like Phoebe, or they’re using fake illnesses to hide real and severe eating disorders and the anorexia/bulimia is incentivizing them to keep up the act.

And you’re right, Kelly and that ilk, social media attention is secondary. They want the medical attention and ir insta and tiktok disappeared tonight they’d still be rubbing shit in their wounds. I always use the example that Kelly doesn’t doctor shop. She’s gone to the same local hospital the entire time she’s been doing this. She just fucks herself up so much they HAVE to treat her. She’s not chasing specific diagnoses or toys, she’s just batshit insane doing unfathomable damage to herself and letting the doctors decide. Paige too, over a year in the same hospital becaus she just kept making herself too sick to discharge.
