Also, Earthbound isn't really so much of a "gentle" game if you think about it. The game has moments like fighting violent kid-gangs, a chain of police officers, enemies that explode to deal fatal damage to you. There's moments of kidnapping and a training ritual involving the removal of all your body parts. And to top it all off, you face what is described to be the incarnation of ultimate evil.
No Earthboundfag on the planet can come even close to replicate anything like this because all they see is "whoa cool, RPG in modern day setting"

Earthbound a very quirky RPG series with dark undertones, so naturally every wanna-be game developer copies it, because RPGs are easy to make, being quirky is often their sole personality trait, and the dark undertones lets them pretend to have nuance. Thus, indie developers lift ideas from the entire series to the point of absurdity, so it's no surprise people quickly lose interest when a game advertises how it's inspired by it, especially when it's generally seen as pretentious.

SquareBones is complaining how, being a person who buys in to pretentious Earthbound copycats, he doesn't like people pointing out that fact. But because his brain doesn't work, he can only express this by stating he's being oppressed somehow.

Earthbound is a JRPG no one cared about until Youtubers started to shill it. It's got enough quirky systems to say "I'm not like those other JRPGs" so it draws in the hipster crowd like flies to shit. When it came out no one cared about it because it isn't that great and the genre had moved on. It's popular because it's rare and youtubers can use it to lord over others in various ways. Earthbound fans wouldn't exist if Smash didn't include Ness and youtubers didn't shill it for years on their top 10 games no one gives a fuck about lists.
