RWBY garbage.pngrevolution60.png Fixed that for you.

What's with RWBY and character bloat? I feel like they keep adding random side characters all the time that are only relevant for a few episodes while the main cast basically have no personality. Then again I haven't watched this since volume 4 so maybe I'm wrong?
Miles and Kerry somehow confused Quality > Quantity.

The show has been written like a cross between a JRPG, your typical high school anime, My Hero Academia, and as the OP said, a shitty anime inspired webcomic. Since Day 1. And it fails to be like K-On! in that it fails to make a main group that’s memorable and brings their own thing to the table.

It's the Bleach approach to storytelling. AKA don't, just throw new characters at your audience.

What kind of character design are these? What theme are they even going for, wooden planks with nails sticking out of them? How do you fuck up character design so bad that it make both Dobson and Chris Chan look competent?
I just don't understand the Simonlarosechu drills man, what a stupid idea for a weapon. It works with gladiator weapons like the scissor because gladiatorial fights are for spectacle, and it works with Big Daddies because they're just fucking scary.

I never even noticed that the goddamned bitch at the right look like someone unironically made a human Simonla in their fanfic because of how atrocious the designs are.

That's true, for all the shit I give Bleach it never had bad character designs. If anything the characters oozed plenty of style and attitude unlike the trio of Deviantart OCs paraded as new RWBY characters.
I know it's kind of an apples and oranges comparison but just check out the difference between RWBY volume 1
and Bleach volume 1 intro.
Bleach oozes style, shows you a little characterisation of everyone with their outfits, expressions and actions while also having a distinct art style. For example Ichigo and Rukia wearing the same colours to begin with, facing away from each other and their arguing in silhouettes, these characters are both similar in personality and will argue because of it but ultimately they're kindred spirits. Bam, instant little bit of characterisation. Ichigo having a permanent scowl, he's 'anime angry' as in 'this character will at some point yell "get to the point, old man" and get slapped down for it' , kind of like his entire training sequence with Rukia, then Urahara and Yoruichi. There's a black and white sequence of him being a sole swordsman fending off others, he would fight by himself to his own detriment rather than risk his friends, or maybe he's the only one who can rise to the occasion. Mod (Con?) being trampled and rising up unhurt with the spirally angry eyes. Is this our comic relief? Yep. I know, right, you can tell I did a full 8 months of media studies before sacking it off, truly I am the Ebert of our times, but I think you guys can pick up what I'm putting down here.

RWBY is mostly re-used shots from the trailers, bad animation, a singer who sings in English but I still can't make out some of the words she's singing and the only character in the show who you see a little bit of exposition about is Jaune with his isolation and acceptance from Pyrrha.
I haven't watched Bleach since 2010 and I still remember more about the cast than RWBY. I still don't even know what the fuck Ruby is doing in the intro, is she missing her mom? Probably, that's obvious. What's not obvious is that the woman in white even is her mom. Is she trying to reach her? Is she imagining having to step into her mom's role as a huntress? Does it look cool? Sure but what the fuck does it mean? Do the petals mean her mom has the same semblance as Ruby? I don't know, I stopped watching before it was revealed. We know Torchwick and Cinder are bad guys because they're surrounded by fire but what else do we know about them? Their scenes give nothing away. Compare it to the brief shot of Ishida in the Bleach intro, he's scowling, he looks standoffish and his outfit is formal and restrained as fitting his character. In the scene of all the characters at around 14 second in we can see a snapshot of every character and their personality. Do we see the same thing at all in the RWBY intro? The first thing the mournful and solemn looking girl does is break up a shop robbery, Spike Spiegel style, with her headphones and irreverence then beam with joy while being fed cookies and throwing out karate movies with accompanying Bruce Lee noises. There's some clear dissonance there.

I know, it's not a fair comparison, Bleach was adapted from a manga and made by a professional animation studio with a long, long record. But it feels like they went into RWBY without even having a real style mapped out, like they just decided to say fuck it and put out the rough draft. I remember on the podcast, in the days of Drunk Tank, Burnie once said "If you're going to put something out online then make a prototype six times, make it six times and have the sixth one be the version you put out" and I think that's pretty good advice that just wasn't followed with RWBY and it's been suffering ever since from being built on shaky groundwork.
