Here's a walkthrough.
Timestamp at 95 seconds.
The xbox creates a temporal wifi network to connect to your phone to continue the process. Maybe the process changed in an update or something and now it requires a QR code in addition to the code, or maybe it just asks for it once the first code has been used.
I don't give enough of a shit to continue digging, but make of that what you will.
Can confirm, the first code needs a wifi connection, but the thing is the app will accept ANY combination of letters meaning it's useless. (for us)

TBH, it would make sense to ask for a QR code as a two-factor measure to prevent remote hijacking and resetting of the XBox. I'm just surprised it doesn't ask for it the first time, but I guess the assumption is that someone wouldn't be able to know when the first setup is happening (unless you're as dumb as Phil and do it live).

The amount of exceptionalism during this stream is mind-boggling on several levels. The best part about all of this is we know those subs will be gone in a few weeks, Phil missed the big views for a console launch (as there aren't many big-name exclusives for the Xbox Series right now), and Flight Simulator will be banished soon enough. And he still won't hit the tips goal on a consistent basis, even with the added "bonus" of an Xbox.

So what I'm getting is:
1.) NinStarRune didn't donate the XBox but ninjaed the code by a fluke OR
2.)NinStarRune DID donate it and Phil called him a fucking idiot for it?

I'm gonna default to the former because it makes more sense. Also its funnier.
Latter makes more sense to me. Phil throws NinStarRune under the bus to

1.) Throw whatever heat he can off of NinStarRune for people that think he donated the box (Phil wouldn't call the person that donated it to him an idiot, hmm?)
2.) Cover his own ass however he can to avoid responsibility of a clear doxx

So, when's Phil going to break his Xbox to the point where it needs the QR code that NinStarRune ninja'd to proceed? Too bad it's not a Nintendo Switch. If it was, it'd happen sooner than later.

Well, pretty successful day Phil, hope he enjoys it. I mean I honestly don't think he enjoys anything but maybe he'll actually have enough of a rush from his new manchild toy and the cash he made today to feel good for a few hours before having to again drink himself half to death just to sleep.

What a baffling comedy of errors, an incredible disaster stream.
  • Gets an Xbox Series X and doesn't bother to play a game from the last two console generations
  • Goes on about GamePass and how fun it will be to just find something to play quickly and doesn't even just download some 500mb indie game to play around with
  • Decides, out of all things, to play the same game he was playing earlier - the Series X has quite literally changed absolutely nothing from earlier when he wasn't playing on it. Pottery.
  • Freudian slips "when I buy a console" when discussing how he acquired the Xbox. I know you love to shit on companies because you know better, but please just slow down next time and keep with your lie.
  • Makes the impeccable decision (using all 12 years of his content creator knowledge) to livestream his own account setup. Livestream you emptying out your Paypal next, Phil.
  • Gets hijacked by a fan pulling a prank, ends up doxing him live on air.
  • Bricks his console briefly.
  • Long segment of just hurtling insults at NinStarRune.
  • About 15 minutes of actual gameplay.
I didn't even watch the entire thing so I'm sure I missed some, but this was a great time. I didn't expect much of this Xbox Series X arc but wow the writers managed to make this little stop-gap worth while. Hope Phil is happy with his money and I hope he gets as many Hogans as he does shots of Tanqueray tonight because the past few days of Phil content has been some of the best in months. Sleep tight little piggy, I hope you can dance just as hard tomorrow.

This is so confusing but do I have this right?:
1. NinStarRune donated the console
2. He played it for months before sending it to Phil, without telling Phil it wasn't factory new
3. He forgot to log out of the console before delicately wrapping it back up in it's factory packaging
4. Phil flipped out and misread this as NinStarRune trying to haxxor him
5. Phil doxxes NinStarRune's mom's email address (lmfao) live to 900 "fans"\

Is that about the shape of it?

This point in particular, Phil doesn't actually give a rat's ass about GamePass. Best we'll get is a couple of streams which will involve people sitting through the download process, before long he'll memoryhole the entire thing.
If there's one thing Phil hates doing it's playing games on a whim, even his fucking User's Choice polls are heavily curated and takes him months if not years to follow up on. What he wants to do is get paid to record hot AAA releases and nothing else.

I think the only thing that's not clear enough is how he managed to get through the QR Code. Or, at least, explain how he did hijack the Xbox.
I think I figured it out. There is a skip button during the QR process, but it leads to a page where you sign in through a Microsoft account. That email being shown is a connected to a Microsoft account.
