It's always been crazy. I was part of communities in the early 2000s that were tinged with cray. But not like this. The Chibi-Usa pedo shippers aside it wasn't anywhere near this bad. don't know how a kids show about magical girls in sailor outfits fighting monsters of the day and evil queens garnered so much insanity. But it did.

Maybe because Usagi likes to eat snacks and play vidya, is not a good student and is "lol so ditzy"? They see some idealised chinese cartoon version of what they want to be/imagine themselves as in real life? You also have Haruka and Michiru being lesbians and a scene where Fisheye outs himself as trans. There are so many other magical girl animes out there but I guess since Sailor Moon is probably the best known in the west that's what they chose to ruin.

Gundam Wing was toxic insanity too. But it was mostly fujos who wanted Relena's head on a stake for ruining their precious 1+2.

Anime in general is a good marker of who is nutzo. Not casual fans but the ones that gush and ship all day. Especially if they are adults. If you are over 30 and painting a moon on your head outside of cosplay or Halloween it's a good marker or crazydom.
