This is a symptom of modern life, but if I had to boil a complicated issue down to a few words: parents are over-accommodating to compensate for their aging bodies; being more a friend than a parent. You see it in their clothes, too: grown-ass men with backwards caps and women with their ass and titties hanging out. I'm no puritan but I think a mom should dress more modestly when out in public with her sons. Christ.

When I relocated my long-time job from an office to home, I had to cancel the internet service. What seemed like the easiest way to do it online wouldn't work. Through a combination of online searching, chance, and dumb luck, I finally found the actual option to specify that the service should be cancelled so that it ended in conjunction with the next billing cycle. I'm half convinced account providers make cancellation as difficult as possible so people will give up and just pay the monthly fee as the path of least resistance.

I believe I shared it here somewhere (edit: over in the Horrors of the Professional World thread) how updating the phone service was equally frustrating. What I was led to believe I could do to have the number ring on my home office line was apparently not possible when I talked to the person at the phone company about finally making the switchover. Ultimately, I had do something slightly different than anticipated to accomplish what I wanted. The worst part is that none of the people I spoke to were foreigners who knew English as a foreign language. All of the people I spoke to worked domestically in US-based offices. In retrospect, I feel as if the phone company people were willing to tell me what I wanted to hear just to keep me as a customer at all costs. Also, I have yet to receive a bill or e-mailed bill reminder for the new service so I have to call back and see if they put me on paperless billing without explicitly notifying me about it. That should be fun.

Pro tip: Use the phone number and options that take you to renew your contract. Tell them you've seen a similar phone at tesco or whatever, and that the person in store offered you a deal (make up a very good deal) then say if you can't match it you'll have to go elsewhere. They'll connect you to cancellations a lot quicker.

At work I had a guy come through my register buying one thing. Everything goes like normal, he puts his card in and says he doesn’t need the receipt. The card reader jingle sounds to remove the card, he grabs the bag and leaves. But the receipt doesn’t print. I stare at it for a second and get a manager. Turns out his card payed like $1 and not the whole transaction.

I’m 99% sure it was intentional. If a customer knows they don’t have all of it on a card they’ll tell me “x on here and the rest in cash/etc.” It might have been one of those debit gift card things since normal bank cards would decline if there wasn’t enough right? But I could be wrong. It could have been accidental but he was swift about finishing and leaving.

Either way it was about $10 short and not some big ticket item. My managers also didn’t seem very upset at me, just explained what happened. I’m not worried about my job or anything, I’m just pissed and embarrassed it happened. That’s the first time I’ve dealt with that. I’ll remember that guy’s mug.
