Anyone know how long he's been at the current job? You can still get grandfathered into higher positions without a college degree in most of Michigan, though it does depend on the business. If it's local or franchised by a local, it's more likely you'll move up without education.

Yeah, so if he's been doing exceptionally at the job it wouldn't be much for the owners/higher ups to consider promoting him. In most areas of lower Michigan now "exceptionally" usually means showing up on time consistently and not strung out on opiates. Could be there's also family or family friends that helped a lot in getting him that offer.

While I don’t think the “are you in highschool” line was necessary, he is right. Whether you’re boasting to Twitter about your raise or not, in America pre-tax is just how everyone lists their base salary, and everyone else knows that’s what they mean.
