Money September 2, 2015: Chris moves to Etsy, suggests "donating to book #11 and beyond"

For every purchase made, it feeds his delusions that he is a legitimate artist and this is a legitimate form of employment. He thinks this is an alternative to a normal job. If people buy, he's going to keep doing this (as he should). As long as there are tards like watermellon to throw their money away, why not cash in? But don't pretend you're helping his situation as if you're the "well-intentioned troll". For every sale made, it just extends the duration he will continue selling and therefore not improving his situation in life. We all know this will never happen, but buying guarantees it.

it's mildly entertaining seeing how pissed some people get when chris does get money for his minimal 'efforts'.

I'd love to see an even less thought-out, more phoned-in version of sonichu. and if other people want to put the money up for it I'm not going to ask them to stop. you're not anti-sonichu are you?
The thing is, when you pay Chris for a commission or medallion or Amiibo, at the end of the day you're actually guaranteed to get what you pay for. I won't begrudge people paying people Chris money for something that he actually delivers on. But we're not paying to release comic pages; we're paying so that he can be inspired to write comic pages.

In order for this to work, people would have to have some assurance that it'd actually get done in a manner that's not half-assed. That Robbie/lesbian OC commission shows that Chris can still be pretty damn amusing, but the amount of time it took for him to do what he was paid for was... discouraging.

If Chris shows a work ethic and the ability to commit to a reasonable schedule then I wouldn't give two shits about the whole thing. Hell, I'd probably kick him some of my money. But until then, you're just trusting a guy whom had a paying job for less than half of a year and who had to be constantly prodded just to make any progress on his dream project to actually, you know, do shit after 4 years of inactivity.

As a graphic designer I envy him but he got famous for his own rights.
Tall Poppy Syndrome.

I'll never tell someone to not spend money on Chris stuff, but it should be mentioned that you could probably get some fucking awesome art thing from @Dollars2009, @_blank_, @BOLDYSPICY!, or @Trickie for $100.

I wonder if there's any way to get him to specify what he wants to be paid per page for new Sonichu.
Thanks - but right now I don't do commissions, mostly because I'm terrible at doing anything like that on a timely basis. I will say though since people have been asking about my art around here, I am seriously leaning towards starting a shop over at Redbubble or something. I won't be able to quit my day job, but it seems like something people might be interested in... for whatever reason. And Chris may have just given me a push to do so.

OT, Well, best of luck to Chris, but I still feel he's pricing himself out of the market. Plus a $10 donation for Sonichu #11? Unless I'm reading that wrong, that isn't $10 per page, that's $10 towards the creation of a comic that may or may not happen. Granted, Chris has proven that he does take selling things at least seriously enough to put something into a box and ship it to you (albeit the thing may still have wet paint or additional bonus spit), but it's also well known that Chris might spend over a year creating a comic if he just doesn't feel in the mood to do so.

I just felt the need to re-post this:

With these high prices and his belief on how much he would make; chances are he knows that the court case will stop his payment

If you're in jail for less than a year, they just pause your tugboat for the month(s) you're in jail.

I don't think Chris is going to jail for even a day, though. The continuances as described by the field agents make it sound like there's some kind of diversion program happening.

Chris just wants for money for thrift-store skirts and drugstore makeup.

You mean stop motion? That's not minimal effort at all. Chris won't do something that requires effort to make. He's also ridiculously technically incompetent.

I more meant "puppeting" them like he did in the Playing House videos. Though he actually did make an unfinished Lego stop motion video about Kart racing in high school. Key word being unfinished.

I think your last sentence is correct. For a decade Chris lived off the tugboat, showing no inclination to work. The tugboat is adequate to fund a lifestyle that works for him. Sure he would like a little bit more money, but who wouldn't.

He has indicated a few times, usually under pressure from Bob or some theoretical ex, that he might get a job at some point. But he never really tried. He didn't want a job, he wanted an excuse not to have a job. A couple failed job applications worked perfectly for him. He could say "Look, I applied for jobs but they didn't want to hire me because trolls/autism. Now you have to get off my back".

The tugboat reinforces that for him. Not only does it fund him so he doesn't need to work, but it is given to him with the message "You aren't really capable of working, so you don't have to. Here is some money to compensate for that". It is easy to internalize that message, particularly since it is one he is happy to receive.

So it's hard to say that "funding" him has any negative effect. If you are really anti-Chris and honestly feel that Chris having more money is a bad thing for the world because of his personal flaws, then I suppose I see it. But it doesn't discourage him from getting a job, because getting a job wasn't something on his radar anyway.

Chris does definitely have delusions about Sonichu and his artistic skills. But I am not sure it is fair to call him delusional for thinking this is a legitimate form of work. He provides something people want, people give him money in exchange for that. There is an inherant "legitimacy" to that. Of course there are other layers to it, but I don't think we can ignore that bottom line.

So hypothetically if Chris got 900 people to donate ten bucks each he would take in nine grand and at that point the heat on him to actually follow through would be immense. I seriously doubt that would happen, but if it did for some reason (4chan raid or something similar) I could see this going very badly PR-wise for him.

I'll believe Sonichu 11 when I see it. Even if it happens i think Marvin has a point, it's going to be Pokeymans by numbers with precious little mary sue content to enjoy.

Eh, the medallions are pretty legitimate sales for him. It's not counter to artistic expression to exploit notoriety.
