Serious question- would the police in Japan talk to a journo about this with proper identification? And do we have any Kiwis that could actually do that? Since USAtoday happened to publish this bullshit, if a journo actually wanted to confirm this story with police, wouldn’t that be easy enough to do? Then at least it wouldn’t take five weeks and further knowing his actual name couldn’t it be just a “confirm or deny” sort of thing and not really violate any rules on privacy? I don’t know Japanese relations between cops and press but it was just a thought.

The Japanese are VERY strict about privacy and do not disclosure information like this easily. That's also why in all this month nothing has been able to be confirmed.

I'd settle for an obituary put out by the family or his employer or even just a statement from the police or his family/employer. I can understand why they wouldn't put his death certificate on the internet, I don't think that's fair to ask of the family.
But then Byuu's family has been completely absent in this story. You'd assume he'd have some next of kin, given his age.

Stuff like this is a guilty pleasure for a lot of people in both sides of the Schrodinger's Near situation. This isn't the only place skeptical of Dave's suicide, the only thing that makes it exceptional is it's the only place I'm aware of where you can actively discuss the possibility of him being alive without being flayed for it.

Near's employer was no longer trustworthy once it became clear that he was the same one parading around a photo of his dead friend's urn on a cyberbullying site and then verbatim "congratulating" us for killing him.
It's really not hard Hector.
