from what I've gathered, they used to be aquantainces and go on eachother's shows, and Mersh was trying to turn the pod guy into one of his loyal circle jerk people. Notice Mersh sucks up to a lot of shows, and recently begain paying more attention to his fan's terrible clout channels and spin off shows.
