With regards to the talk about his mental illnesses, I'm not really sure if there is anything that could actually get him sent to involuntary psychiatric care over prison. I don't know Virginia statutes but in most states, the statutes require your mental illness to either directly have been the cause of you committing the crime, or it prohibited you from understanding right from wrong. Keep in mind, Dahmer tried to use necrophilia as a defense and that was rejected.

Successful insanity defenses don't really result in a better outcome than prison anyway. In many ways it's a worse outcome since insanity is largely incurable so your stay in some kind of institution is even longer than it would be if you just went to prison. The only real reason to plead insanity is if you're facing execution, since it's illegal in the US to execute the mentally disabled.

Chris is entitled to a $1200 monthly payment from the DSS because of his autism and the fact the DSS believes he's unable to work. This was paid to Barb. Barb usually sent him (what I'm assuming is) pocket money. She can't do that for reasons that should be obvious, and Chris has access to Barb's account for some reason, so he did the "logical" thing and stole $750 from it so he could go shopping.

I don’t want this to come off as concern trolling, but do you have the legal authority to request a refund? Presumably if some paid Chris money for a commission, Chris completed to the commission, and GoFundMe is holding the money in escrow, he’s legally entitled to that money. I know you probably have some privileges since you set up the fundraiser, but I’d really hit up a lawyer and ask if you’re allowed to do that before you do
