In 2020, video game writer Chris Avellone was accused of sexual assault by Karissa Barrows, Kelly Bristol and Christy Dena. Chris’s reluctance to defend himself or address the allegations led to him being terminated from studios he had been working for as a contractor. After almost a year of radio silence, Chris addressed the allegations in two [1] [2] Medium blogs, and filed a complaint against Barrows, Bristol and 1-100 Does. Case No. 21STCV22573
The suit was filed in Los Angeles, California and the causes of action are Libel Per Se, six counts (paragraphs 19, 32, 43, 54, 67, 78, of the complaint), for which Avellone prays for judgment against Defendants as follows (page 16):
Plaintiff has demanded a trial by jury.
The Attorneys:
Plaintiff: Christopher Frederic Avellone is being represented by Neville L. Johnson and Aleeza L. Marashlian of Johnson & Johnson LLP.
Defendants: Karrisa Elyse Barrows and Kelly Bristol are jointly being represented pro-bono by Daniel L. Allender and Jessica Pettit of Robins Kaplan LLP.

1. Karissa Elyse Barrows / SJBSMama / KarissaEB / Claire Estheim
Karissa Barrows is a cosplayer, video game fan and convention go-er. She had a brief stint in the air-force and but was eventually discharged due to her bipolar disorder diagnosis. She initially began a pre-med program but fell pregnant, leading her to pursue a qualification in medical transcription.
1.1 Relationship with Chris Avellone
In August 2012, Karissa met Chris Avellone at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, Georgia. After a night of drinking, Chris, David Gaider and Steve Jaros escorted Karissa back to her hotel room. Chris and Karissa made out in the hallway, but when Karissa told Chris “This is not a good idea” the sexual nature of their encounter stopped. According to Karissa, Chris would have assaulted her if she wasn’t on her period that weekend, even though she had a roommate sleeping in their shared hotel bed.
For the rest of Dragon*Con, Chris and Karissa remained on good terms. Karissa napped in Chris’ hotel room, and he escorted her to the train station where they shared a final kiss. Karissa tweeted affectionately about Chris and referred to him as her “conboyfriend” to her friends. To a coworker, she mentioned needing "more than one con" to "nail" Chris "down" and needing to "keep the alcohol flowing."
At Dragon*Con 2013, Karissa encouraged Chris to hit on her friend Jackie Izawa / GeekyFriedRice. Not realizing that this was a test, Chris pursued Jackie and they initiated a casual, long-distance relationship. In 2014, Jackie and Chris’ relationship began to deteriorate, and Karissa became increasingly hostile towards him. During this period, Karissa tweeted that she had never experienced any abuse or harassment as a female gamer/cosplayer. At Jackie’s birthday dinner that year, Karissa announced that she got Chris blacklisted from Dragon Con due to her testimony on his behavior towards Jackie during their breakup.
In Karissa's 2020 tweets about Chris, she stated that the events she described happened between 2013 and 2015 even though they happened between 2012 and 2014. She claimed she rarely ever drank, but in a resurfaced recording from three months after the alleged assault, she expressed her love for Midori, Vodka and Rum. (reupload) She also claimed that she never drank with Avellone after the event, even though her behavior in the aforementioned recording suggests otherwise.
1.2 Mass Effect Cast Cosplay Initiative (MECC)
In 2012, Karissa founded the Mass Effect Cast Cosplay Initiative which endeavored to get Mass Effect voice actors and models to cosplay their respective characters. The idea was that donations would be collected to fundraise the event, and any excess amounts would be donated to a charity chosen by the participating actors.
A costumer named Leah Nelson had volunteered to make armor for the initiative. After she shipped the costume, Karissa reimbursed Leah via e-check as there wasn’t enough money in the MECC PayPal account. It was revealed that Karissa had transferred this money to her personal bank account to “collect interest.” Leah attempted to enquire further as to why this was done, but Karissa ignored her, leading Leah to raise her concerns to the cosplay group (N7Elite) that most MECC volunteers were a part of. N7Elite sent an email to Karissa requesting financial transparency on the project. As MECC was not affiliated with N7Elite as a group, Karissa argued she did not need to answer to them, resulting in her getting banned from the group.
Karissa eventually sent Leah a basic MECC financial statement. In response, Leah asked enquired if the MECC was a registered organisation in Illinois. Karissa claimed she was not at liberty to share this information, even though a registered charity is required to make this information visible to the public. As a result, Leah was removed from the MECC. Karissa told other members that Leah had to pull out due to “personal matters” and had the actor send the costume to Karissa, even though Leah had asked for it to be returned to her.
This behavior led to a donor getting in contact with other donors to disseminate this information to them. Another issue arose when actors and models began pulling out of the event, as Karissa did not announce this, nor update her website accordingly, even when reminded by others. At least one actor was advised by members of N7Elite to back out of the project due to Karissa’s sketchy behavior. The MECC were also criticized for their strange fundraising practices which are delineated in this post.
Karissa had posted a breakdown of all of the donations received at the end of 2012 but did not post anything in the 14 months following that. When asked why the amounts were out of date, Karissa said that an updated breakdown would be posted within "the next few weeks." This was never done, and there were no subsequent MECC events.
1.3 #BelieveAllWomen, unless they accuse my famous friends
"J" alleged that voice actor Ray Chase had sexually harassed her at a convention in 2017. J confided in an online friend, "B" what had happened to her, which resulted in him leaving the Discord to support her. A few days after, Karissa reached out to B to ask what had happened. Karissa claimed that there were a lot of rumors surrounding J but nothing public should be said unless concrete evidence can be produced. Karissa assured B that she would investigate the claims made by J as she was a moderator and liason for LAVA.
This culminated in a phone call where J explained everything that happened between Ray and herself. J later suspected that Karissa was more interested in doing damage control than investigating the harassment claims as she was concerned with why J chose to confide in her friend B and was not interested in hearing about details including another voice actor (Robbie Daymond) which supplemented her account with Ray. Karissa also suggested that Ray was drunk, missed his spouse and that J had a crush on the voice actor. She repeated her claim that there were unpleasant rumors surrounding J, which no one other than her could corroborate. Karissa also attempted to gaslight J by claiming that she had past trauma that she was "projecting onto innocent men." One of J's friends wanted to believe Karissa's version of events, but when they had witnessed Ray and Robbie's reactions to J, they were unable to.
When it was announced that Ray would be going to J's state, Karissa added J and another individual to a group DM four hours after. This was notable as Karissa and J hadn't spoken in over a year at that time, and had not even spoken to J about her allegations against Ray since the initial phone call, and may have been another attempt at controlling J. Interestingly enough, the day before Karissa came out with her story about Chris Avellone, she unfollowed J from Twitter. J notes that although Karissa has been vocal about how there shouldn't be any restrictions on people coming forward with their allegations, she has yet to hear anything from Karissa in regards to her investigation into Ray's misconduct, suggesting that this is performative activism. Most disrespectfully, when J came forward with her story, Karissa publicly humiliated J by bringing up the trauma that she experienced at 18 years old to call into question her reliability. At least one of Karissa's friend also participated in ridiculing J online.
Whether or not J was truly harassed by Ray Chase is irrelevant to the case at hand. It is however undeniable that Karissa was aggressively trying to silence the accuser by gaslighting her, claiming there were rumors about her and publicly humiliating her. It is hypocritical for Karissa to treat a fellow victim like this, and demonstrates that she, as eloquently put by A, is a clout chaser. As Jackie (Chris' former casual GF) said, "If someone asks you to not do something because it makes them uncomfortable/scared and you do it and/or make no move to remedy the situation? You’re not a good person." J had told Karissa that she had gone too far by bringing up her old trauma, but Karissa's tweets still remain. Karissa however, did delete 62K+ tweets when people began bringing up her old tweets contradicting her story though...
2. Kelly Bristol / Glitterbroker / Stabitha / StabithaGames
Kelly Bristol is a cosplayer, video game fan and convention go-er. She is also a long-term friend of Karissa and Jackie. Apart from that, I don't have anything to say that doesn't sound like an ad hominem so let's move on.
2.1 Relationship with Chris Avellone
In response to Karissa's tweets, Kelly alleged that Chris Avellone had groped her several times at the Pulse Bar during D*C 2014, and was attempting to proposition her. She mentioned that Chris was Jackie's boyfriend at the time. Kelly explained that Chris only stopped harassing her when her friend Scott gave him a dirty look.
In 2014, Kelly posted this image showing Scott kissing Chris as he flexed. Two hours later, she tweeted that "what happens at #DragonCon stays at DragonCon" which is a strange statement after getting supposedly assaulted. In 2020, Chris contacted Scott for side of the story, and Scott stated that he did not see anything and was surprised that he was mentioned as a witness, and never had any intentions of turning Chris into paste. Another individual who was at the Pulse Bar at the time declared under the penalty of perjury that she did not witness any groping by Chris or any confrontation between him and Scott.
On the final night of D*C, when her friends began discussing the sexual harassment they had faced, Kelly explained "that stuff hasn't happened to me. As I told J, I'm fat & that's kryptonite to the frat boy element that's here." 20 minutes after this tweet, Kelly got drunk and tweeted that she would "hit on everybody." It is important to mention that Jackie and Chris broke up d D*C 2014, so the alleged groping she described would have occurred before she said she hadn't been harassed by anyone. As previously mentioned, Kelly had been friends with Karissa for years, but strangely the latter only found out about her allegations when it was tweeted publicly. Kelly was not open to answer any questions, and has blocked anyone who brought up her old tweets that were inconsistent with her story.
3. Christy Dena / ChristyDena
Christy Dena is a writer, designer and a professor from Australia. She specializes in interactive media and has an experimental approach towards narrative design.
3.1 Relationship with Chris Avellone
In an interview with Jason Schreier, Christy Dena claimed that in 2013, she met up with Chris Avellone at a convention in Melbourne, Australia. Chris was not in Australia, let alone Melbourne for all of 2013. Unsurprisingly, this was not fact checked by any of the journalists that published her story. The event she described happened during Game Connect Asia Pacific 2012.
Christy Dena explained in the article that Chris had gotten her drunk by repeatedly buying her drinks, and she didn't realize that this was an intentional pattern of behavior. She neglected to mention that she was a heavy drinker without Chris' involvement, and "3 bars with the gang" wasn't "hardcore." According to Chris, they did not sleep together but Christy did not have any memory of that night, and she only suspected otherwise because she woke up naked. As Chris participated in Christy's game design event in 2017, she probably would not have had any issue with Chris if Karissa did not come forward with her allegations.
4. Jacqui Collins/ JacquiCollins_ / Violet
Jacqui Collins is a public relations lead for Riot Games, or at least was. As a result of the recent lawsuit involving Activision Blizzard, Jacqui has removed any mention of Riot from her Twitter bio. This is because people have started to remember that Riot Games happens to have an ongoing lawsuit against the state of California that alleges similar misconduct. This isn't the first time she's tried to ignore association with alleged sexual abusers, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
4.1 Relationship with Chris Avellone
Jacqui Collins and Chris Avellone were close friends in 2013. She described him as her "boyfriend in another life" and joked about how she had a feeling that Chris would send her a dick pic. She clarified that it would be all in good fun because they are "BIFFLEZ." On May 24 2014, she tweeted that she wanted to use Tinder out of curiosity. That evening, she went out with two other people who began making out in front of her. As they did this, one played footsie with Jacqui underneath the table. During this time she was messaging Chris and asked him for a third-wheel exit strategy. Chris interpreted this as a come-on and responded to her inappropriately which made her feel "physically ill" when she woke up to his message. Notably Karissa and Kelly's attorneys have alleged that the third-wheel exit strategy Jacqui pleaded for was a "straightforward request for professional help." This may be referring to her past as Violet, but read on.
Three months after this event, she seemed to hint that she was in an open relationship. In 2015, she confirmed that she was indeed in one with her boyfriend. She remarked in a conversation with Chris' former casual partner, Jackie that there's a 50/50 chance she'd be down to sleep with her friends and they should just ask.
4.2 #BelieveAllWomen, unless they accuse my famous friends
As stated previously, Jacqui Collins works for Riot Games so it may not be surprising that she has ties to a few (alleged) rapists. Jacqui Collins appeared in a few pornographic films as "Violet" with James Deen. In 2015, Deen was accused of rape and/or abuse by several pornographic actresses including two former girlfriends. Jacqui made no comment on the allegations, and even appeared in another scene with James in May 2016. (NSFW IMAGES)
Jacqui's mentor, Andrien Gbinigie / Escoblades of Ubisoft was accused of rape by Kate Johnston, a Kairos Media executive. Andrien was also accused of leading on two streamers, and sending unsolicited dick pics. In response, Ubisoft suspended Andrien. However, as Ubisoft had five staff members resign over allegations and suspended another executive, the allegations against Andrien were overshadowed and quickly forgotten. This was further aided by the complicit silence of Jacqui and Karissa (yeah, she's friends with him too...)
Andrien continues to work at Ubisoft to this day with no further announcements from the studio.
