It is not the case. There are state run hospitals for criminally insane people they'll lock you in for possibly life if you commit a crime, but psych hospitals are by and large short term with most capping out at holding someone for a month, usually much much less time.

And they very seldom care what happens to you when released. Some people get released at a bus stop with a good luck ticket written.
