I am convinced Barb has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Like full blown NPD. It explains all of her behavior and actions. Chris picked up on a lot of these traits (as children do while they grow up). Bob was a push over and an enabler, which is extremely common in narcissistic family structures. They both failed Chris miserably, which is something nobody should forget.

My thing with anything called "personality disorder" is it just seems like the shrink version of calling someone a complete and utter cunt. The list of traits doesn't read like a differential diagnosis so much as a "this is how assholes act" list. It isn't like, say, autism where you actually have an objective list of traits and if you take an autist to nearly any shrink they'll say yup it's autism.
From experience, that's the logical response, but when you take the time and effort for a charitable venture and someone fucks it up this badly, you tend to take it personally.

It was a babysitter who allegedly locked Chris in a room for hours on end, not Barb. That said, she was a shitty enough parent to leave him with someone like that, so she's not exactly blameless. She also was the one to encourage him to read the toy packages; if he did it successfully, he got the toy. So she's also responsible for his entitled, transactional worldview.

Agreed, however: dementia-riddled as she is, Barb is hardly Barb anymore. Even she doesn’t hardly seem to know who she is. We may not personally be weeping over her as much as another dementia patient who was once anyone but the selfish, enabling mother of a monster, but it’s hard not to feel bad for her when the rape happened to a confused husk of a person.

Absolutely. None of this excuses Chris' actions. I don't think she deserved this. What she deserved was to be held accountable when she was sane, but unfortunately it's too late for that.
