Why do these soy golems always do this? Every time something like this happens they:
(1) get distracted from their initial targets and widen the firing zone to try to get rid of other people they don't like,
(2) expect everyone to inconvenience themselves to satisfy their silly Internet grudge, and

Unless your phone was exclusive to Verizon or Sprint, there's zero reason why you would need to get an overseas phone. Even then, a lot of Verizon and Sprint "exclusive" phones had the ability to read GSM anyway because it's cheaper to have dual compatibility for GSM and CDMA. It also hasn't really been relevant since the 2G and 3G days since 4G LTE allowed for multiple connections.

I strongly doubt overseas carriers brazenly strongarm you into using their devices like the big (now) 3 here with bullshit excuses like "we can't give you visual voicemail because your phone isn't an AT&T phone." I would also trust the companies stateside way more than Huawei with my device.

Most modern phones will work on Japanese networks, but Japan's mobile carriers are usually pretty loathe to let people bring their own phones unless you're a tourist getting a rental sim from the airports, which would be a temporary thing at best. It's probably more for privacy purposes versus using regular SMS. The American number could also very well be a Skype/Google Voice number which you can get regardless of where you live and allow you to basically make local calls while abroad.

Nigger, if your phone is a smartphone it's more cost effective to use some sort of Internet connection based messenger than actual SMS. Then again, another better yet solution is to use some shortwave, or maybe a VHF or UHF transmitter which supports some sort of digital mode and send a message that way.
