The Final Fantasy Thread

Since you sound like you know a thing or two about FFIII, do job levels even do anything? I can't seem to tell any difference. Although I kinda like how you can just slip into any class and be ready to go. FFV had a more robust job system, but I never much cared for grinding out levels in classes I hated.

Damage/Healing and Effectiveness of some abilities like the Thief being able to steal better items like Gungnir from Odin

So if you worked hard enough, you could basically have a Red Mage with none of the drawbacks.

Why waste time with a red mage? They suck mid-game when they can't learn lvl 4-6 magic and Dualcast cost 999 points to master which is a waste of time to do until end game plus there are much better options like Dual wielding rapid-firing spellblading Freelancer/Mimic setups. There is some fun being a red mage being able to dualcast Blue Magic I guess and that's it.

Yeah, but early on they're useful.

You can swap skills without mastering the classes in FFV, but mastering them gives a passive ability to the freelancer and mime classes. Like if you master the ninja you can dual wield with freelancer and you don't need to equip it to one of your limited skill slots.

Here are more ff3 changes:

Phoenix Downs can be farmed, no more farming birds in bahamut's mountain.
Job adjustments from the 3d version:
- Bards are more useful with Sing.
- Black Belts have Yang's ability from FF4.
- Viking's Provoke is multi-target, hooray for being useful as a tank.
- Geomancers like the 3d version won't make you mad with backfire.
- Dark Knight's special ability finally scales well.
You can come back to Sea Shrine if you miss something
Defend gives job exp
Sage and Ninja are nerfed
Cloud of Darkness no longer spams her LAZOR attack.

would you say it's a worthwhile version of ff3 then?

Most of FF3 (NES)'s difficulty is from bullshit mechanics and lack of save points. 3D version is harder in some ways like enemies attacking twice because the hardware it was developed for was not able to handle more polygons and therefore more monsters. Unlike the 3d version, the graphics have aged better and it has the best soundtrack but it's missing the Iron Giant dungeon. So yeah if you own/played the japanese nes classic or the 3d versions, you might be hesitant to buy this one. But it's great for the normies/newcomers.

Red Mage combines well with most things. This assumes you're sticking with RM to obtain Dualcast the hard way as opposed to an hour or two of grinding Movers.

  • Mug lets RM contribute to battles and steal a treat here and there.
  • RM has more options with a staff than a blade. Healing Staff casts Cura, Sage's Staff boosts Holy spells, the Wonder Rod can be set up for certain situations or to Reset a battle which is going badly.
  • RM lacks MP, but Sing cares not a whit about your stats. They can let loose with the Singing and conserve their MP for support spells.
  • Equip Axe, Equip Bow, Throw, Jump, Animals, Gaia. All of these allow RM to contribute (while conserving MP) or boost their attack power.

The 3D version is the one I'm most familiar with, but I've always been curious about the original version, largely because the 3D version adds a bunch of stuff like making the party actual characters and the whole enemies attacking twice thing. Truth be told, I am strongly considering getting the remaster if only because it's literally the only release of the original version to ever come to the West, but that $17 price tag is a little steep for a 30 year old JRPG (it is currently on sale for $14, but even so I think that's a little bit too much).

I see Lightning as a media creation, pretty much. She didn't get famous organically, through heroic feats or scenes. She couldn't even inspire memes.

Everybody was instructed on how to like her, and why.
The only part I liked regarding lightning was when she tried to slap and intimidate big dyke bitch (can't remember her name) and big dyke bitch basically asked if that was it. Lightning is a soldier in a military that beats up domestic animals and spoiled kids. Big dyke bitch has SEEN shit.

I'm liking this version of FF3 way more than the DS version. I'm glad I gave this another shot because I didn't really care for it on DS even though I was hyped for it back then. The SNES approach just suits it so much better, and some of the modern conveniences like auto battle keep things running at a solid pace.

Many FAQs were lost due to people getting banned in arguments with him and then proceeding to remove all their material. There even used to be a phrase for it, "VeghB8": topics that trolls knew would summon this guy.
Baller.
Part of me thinks they let Nomura run loose with the lead character so he'll leave the rest to professionals. It may explain everything feels out of sync after 7.
6 and 7 both experimented with the main character convention. 6 arguably has no real main character, and 7's main character is almost an accidental hero in hindsight. No sense of destiny or specialness from birth. Nor even a lot of traditionally heroic qualities. Both were hits and so Square thought "oh let's do it more"
