Orwell fought with the POUM, a "Trotskyist"/non-Soviet Marxist militia, though he joined the POUM more or less at random after arriving in Spain, not initially understanding the differences between the various militias. Orwell was more positively disposed toward the "Trotskyists," anarchists and other non-Soviet groups than he was toward the International Brigades, which were Soviet-backed. However, Orwell distinguished between the leadership of the International Brigades and the rank-and-file membership. He didn't hold the soldiers participating in pro-Soviet militias in contempt. Orwell even expressed some sympathy for Nationalists soldiers, many of whom he believed had been coerced into fighting, and who were often living in even more miserable material conditions than he was.
