I'm sticking to my guns that the defense will take one look at Chris, realize they don't have time for his shit and talk him into an insanity plea.

Public defenders are never paid enough to go to trial, but an insanity plea is both a long shot and a ton of work. More likely if they can pressure him they pressure him to take some sort of suspended/reduced sentence.

I am genuinely curious about how long (if ever) it's going to take for Chris to "wake up and smell the coffee". Today's court appearance update is not a good starting point.

Insanity pleas are very hard to make for a lawyer. They slow everything down. A court appointed lawyer is going to go for a quick plea bargain, not a long drawn out court fight.

Chris is going to have to plead guilty to something... The three options are 1) elder abuse, 2) incest and 3) rape of an incapacitated person. I would think the prosecutor would definitely want to make sure Chris ends up on the sex offenders list... that eliminates option 1. The only bargaining area is between 2 and 3. Incest carries a minimum sentence of 1 year. I bet that is what the prosecutor feels he can make stick.

By the time Chris spends a year in prison, the house and toys will be long gone. Barb will probably be gone too. His internet fame will be considerably dimmed. Chris will be released into a shabby apartment with his tugboat to sustain him. Unemployable for multiple reasons. No one to look after him. He is going to have to change to survive.

It's worth keeping an ear open for any medical emergencies that might come up from Chris losing his shit, hurting himself, and needing a hospital visit. Beyond that, we aren't likely to get much more information on him untill the September date. (It's also possible Chris could snap and be drawn up on even more charges.)

However, keep an eye on the Ruckersville house. If it suddenly starts to get cleared out and/or renovated, that's a damn good sign the house has been foreclosed and Barb has been sent to a adult care home.

Due to the whole COVID-19 thang, it could take at least a year or so. Barb should be able to defer payment for at least that long.

I don’t have certain verification on this but given the arrest wouldn’t the police have likely secured access through a warrant? Especially given the appearance of it, granted it was due to thinking he was staying with family that he travelled to Richmond, but it also gives the appearance of flight.
Again, not familiar with VA nor in the field myself but educated in it and imagine that would have been a serious consideration if he took anything compromising with him.
