Gotta say, I fucking love your synopses.I finally caught up, although after the first 30 pages I skipped to highlights because for every page I read two more were added (until the last 10 pages). I didn't see if a transcript of Bella's call with gungann had been typed up, so it's here. This was fun to type up because you can hear Bella panicking.
B = Bella G = Gungann O = Fiona (initially wasn't clear who it was).
B: I was reflecting back what he was telling me. I was trying to just repeat what he was saying. It's - I dunno, it's just a way to communicate with him, to get him to open up more, to show him understanding. Regardless, I was never gonna do that, and I was trying to put this guy - if you get to when he said that, I was trying to think of a way to start leaking it in a way that I wouldn't get caught, in a way that he would get arrested and Barb would go to hospital like she is right now. There's not really any new information here, but it is interesting to read - if you've never been unfortunate enough to meet someone like this you can get a bit wiser about the tactics.
This is very obvious because we know Bella is into incest and was deliberately manipulating Chris. But if you didn't have this plethora of evidence we have, and you weren't wise to these tactics, the overall pressure could make you doubt your own convictions (aka gaslighting). Generally speaking you'll feel something's wrong, but you won't be able to work out what it is, if you're not used to people who behave like this.
- Denies wrongdoing ("I never encouraged him to rape his Mom more")
- Framing the concerns as unreasonable ("Why does it matter? Why are you asking about this? It's a weird thing to ask about!")
- When evidence is shown that this did happen, the story changes ("I did encourage him to rape his Mom more, but that was just a tactic to get him to admit to it")
- When it's pointed out that doesn't make sense ("He'd already admitted to it") this is deflected ("What do you mean? What are you referring to?")
- Trying to make the person feel their concerns are paranoid ("Why would you think I'm into incest? That is a weird thing to suggest")
- Trying to make the person feel stupid ("I'm not into incest, it's a clever investigative technique that you obviously don't understand. This is a stupid thing to think. Are you retarded?")
- Appealing to social conformity/argumentum ad populum ("I never saw anyone that claimed I was into it" - irrelevant and doesn't mesh with all the comments are actually saying that)
- Faux moral indignation ("How dare you suggest I'm into incest")
- Steamrollering - not letting the other person talk and repeating the same thing over and over
