There’s something uniquely tragic about Corissa mismanaging her money by the overconsumption of new fashions, lingerie, makeup, trendy restaurants/bars etc.
It's a mistake many women make, surely some readers here have, and yet thinking about Corissa making this error makes me wince.
When you think of many women living this life, most are at least getting the benefits of this side of the deal.
They ARE glamorous.
They look STUNNING in the designer size two miniskirt & heels they spent a month's rent on.
That Dior mascara cost as much as a tank of gas in Joe Biden's America but it makes them look like a doe-eyed princess.
They blew a day's wages on a tab at a trendy new eaterie (and barely got anything to eat!), but they turned the head of every red-blooded man with a pulse when they walked in the door.
The shoes, frocks, and clothes in their closet cost a sum that (had it been invested wisely instead) probably could have set them up for a more comfortable retirement, but hell, at least in their golden years if funds are meager these women will still have the memories (and the photos) of being a gorgeous woman who was seen, desired, and lived as only glamorous, beautiful women can.
And after she has lived it up, the beautiful woman has a damn good chance of landing a steady suitor who doesn't mind working hard to support her for the joy of having a beautiful wife.
Meanwhile, a woman who is thrifty and not into the glamorous life can squirrel away and invest, work a career, buy her clothes at Walmart and payless shoes, retire a millionaire at 40, and spend the rest of her life in comfort and style traveling the world as a reward for working hard in her youth. If she teams up with a man of similar disposition you can multiply the rewards.
Corissa gets NONE of the above. Not the security from being an industrious plain jane who saves every penny and lives in blessed prosperity and comfort in her old age. Nor the merriment and glamour and memories of a life lived in style.
She has the bank account of the prodigal son and the tragically unglamorous and unstylish life of 400 lb flyover country death fat. She has the reward of neither the ant nor the grasshopper.
Utter tragedy.
