The story is way too bloated to be enjoyable, and you can feel the length just by watching Oney, DD and Julian play through it. Honestly, I like the art style but how about removing the voice acting altogether and draw more reaction images of the main characters (or just omit them all together and do FF7 style model animations instead?) It's all overkill and probably needs a major overhaul to be good.

If the new story/script was just taking the piss out YiiK it has the potential to be really funny. The developer's probable meltdown to it would probably be even funnier.

Also, I’m glad Chris brings attention to the whole thing with Rory, because I’ve been thinking a lot about this, and Rory’s line in today’s episode really made me want to talk about it now.

Just how in the fuck am I supposed to take Rory’s character?

Like seriously, this is a character whose going through a massive depression due to the death of his sister and essentially almost committed “soul suicide” over it. He clearly hates himself and latches onto these assholes in a desperate attempt to want to keep living. His mom is apparently the town bicycle and you hear next to nothing about his dad, but I’ll just assume is a drunk.

He has these moments that you’d expect are meant to be taken seriously…but almost immediately has the rug pulled out from under him for “lol random humor” joke.

Dude admits that his sister killed herself over being bullied because of how he is, and the thing that he thought was his sister’s soul was just an alternate version of him, making you think he’ll need to face his personal demons in a fight?

LOL RANDOM GOLDEN ALPACHA FIGHT JOKE

You go back to his house after Alex blew up at him that will lead to the first player’s choose of if Rory kills himself or not, essentially setting up the fact that he does hate himself and wants to die?

LOL RANDOM “HIS MOM IS JUST A LEG” JOKE

He asks to have a serious talk with Alex and, if accepted, fully admits that he’s incredibly depressed and feels that he has nothing to live for anymore and is just utterly aimless in life, leading to one of the few moments where Alex acts like a caring person and essentially helps Rory work through some of his grief?

And now today, where(if you know about it ahead of time) you’re seeing Rory for the first time knowing that you managed to just avoid making him kill himself, we get a “lol it’s funny because he was going to kill himself” line from him, and I really just do not get it at all.

This writing is tonally shit. I can’t tell if the creators of the game are just this stupid or if they just actively want to shit on dramatic moments in RPGs. Like, the entire game comes off as if they either have utter contempt for the genre, or they’re just the worst at storytelling.

The game's writer is a fucking twit is how you should take the character, they couldn't lock down what tone they wanted to go with for the entire game and Rory is a very big sign of it. The worst part is this 'update' of the game is less grating with its tonal whiplash, though that's just barely an improvement. Its really weird and what potential there was is squandered continually. Just YIIK things.

You can really tell there is nothing to Chondra’s character because she just repeats the “Alex is my alternate-universe brother” thing from Claudio and then just goes “oh I know about the plot because reasons”. No big heart-to-heart or explanation of who she is or anything.

Her character is "has a missing brother" and yet she jumps down Alex's throat for wanting to discuss the only thing he knows about her. She sucks.

Between now and the 'endgame' is a few cutscenes and the rest is fairly skippable filler sidequests from Onism, if they actually do those it could be a while but they may just skip past them since they're totally irrelevant.

She's written and designed to be in Claudio's shadow. She follows Claudio, works at his store (I think), and hangs out with his friends. Her only backstory event was about how she was dragged to Japan because of Claudio and she wears her outfit because she made a friend there who gave it to her.

There's enough there to be compelling, but I don't think the writer realizes what kind of character he's written. Instead of acknowledging that Chondra is clinging onto her brother at the expense of her own interests and identity (possibly in an attempt to make sure HE doesn't go missing, like their little brother did) the fact is never brought up and her character is just a generic "strong lady with an attitude."

No lie I think you put as much if not more thought into the character than the writer(s) did. If they explored that it would actually make for an interesting turn of things.. but instead she's just kinda there. Hell she literally just tags along because her brother calls for her in the store.

It's just one example of YIIK's squandered potential. The characters should have been the focus so that the themes could be explored naturally. The core premise is good. Something supernatural happens to the main guy, he seeks out people who understand and they become friends through dealing with the crazy shit together. It just gets so bogged down with pretention and dictionary definitions that it completely loses the thread.

An editor would have pointed this out. It reads like a first draft, or something that no one looked at outside of the writer and someone who didn't want to hurt his feelings.

Then again, Postal Redux was ported on the Switch and recently the PS4. The Postal games are known to be edgy (and I mean EDGY) games. Fun games to play though. Except for Postal 3. There's a good reason why Running With Scissors want you to forget about that game.

Or did they patch that out? I never played the game but I remember someone telling me that.
