that's what strikes me about Chris: he still holds onto this escapist fantasy world well into his adulthood, when most people outgrow this in late childhood or early adolescence.

This is kind of a blessing for him right now. At worst, he might for a while, but I don't think he's going to be despairing about his situation forever. I don't believe in karma, but I think the amount Chris suffers is going to match the amount of mental capacity (and therefore responsibility) he has. If he was really is more "with it" than he seems, then he might deserve all the misery that people are saying he's going to face. If he really is just a retard who has completely lost what few marbles he had, he's not going to suffer much. Chris has proven that he can be pretty apathetic about long terms of confinement and loneliness, with occasional tantrums when he has the energy.

it's a blessing and a curse. his fantasies have made him very resilient, capable of brushing off years of trolling and humiliation, and it should help him cope with more serious consequences too. on the other hand, his escapism has often prevented personal growth and non-retarded decision-making.

(all work detail jobs he could be made to do) If Chris is told he'll be assigned to any of those work details and he refuses to do it, well at worst he'll get his visitation revoked, put in solitary. or "other measures." it doesn't specify what those are.
