High Guardian Spice - Tumblr: The CalArt Anime

A different cow made me think of this again, so I figured I'd share. This information is second hand from my wife as a former artist on the early development of the show, so I can't really verify with receipts or anything.

Kate Leth left the animation industry because she claimed she wanted to focus on comics. This is untrue. After working on this and another project (something for Mattel, I think? Or Hasbro? Some cartoon based on a toy franchise), she has since been blacklisted from the industry for being a nightmare both personally and professionally. My wife is friends with some SB/SBR from this show and they all had a group chat where a lot of what they talked about was how much they hated Leth.

She was made to leave a lucrative career in animation (it's unionized in LA) because she's atrocious to work with, and this show was where she burned the most bridges with her bad attitude. And since animation is super cliquey, she was unable to find work after this.

Again, I have no receipts because it's all second hand. But the animation community has no love for her, and her leaving it was not a choice she made. She was just unable to find work. Just something to laugh about.

Rate me retarded, but I was expecting the show to look better animated than this. I'm amazed, after all this time, this is what the have to show for it.

Also lmao, the witch sounds like a grown woman. Holy shit, I was not expecting that.

Actually, this is worse than that. If a bunch of no named DA artists made something like this, you might think "Oh? You guys got together to do this? Neat!" because they're some rag-tag artists that came together for a project. Getting this out of that is an accomplishment.

A whole damn animation studio coming together to make this is a little embarrassing. And by a little, I mean "Holy shit, what the fuck were you guys doing this whole time when you were supposed to be animating this fake anime? Why do the backgrounds look better than the characters standing on it?

I lost at 0:30 when the characters were on varying degrees of being off model. The elf girl being the worst as her head is enormous. Also, how are those girls going to fight a fucking dragon? With love and friendship and caring?

I lost at 0:30 when the characters were on varying degrees of being off model. The elf girl being the worst as her head is enormous. Also, how are those girls going to fight a fucking dragon? With love and friendship and caring?

In other words it's as reputable as a 4Chan "leak". I.e not true at all. Anything to shit on this show it seems

Personally I think the show looks great so it's very much not that lol

But if you need some kind of evidence, Kate Leth had a pretty public fallout with a lot of her ex friends like Mey Rude and Christina 'Steenz' Stewart, and is no longer mutuals with people like Molly Ostertag, King Pecora or Noelle Stevenson etc. She made a bunch of animation connections and then ruined them. She had the same problem in comics but it's a LOT easier to keep working in comics because so much of the work is done in a solo capacity. Working in an animation office is something else entirely.

I shared it because it was interesting to see her try to spin it as if it was her choice and I couldn't find a thread for just her, but she's discussed frequently here. She's not the first person to loudly leave animation and pretend it was their choice. Hell, Luke Weber's entire career now is based on him screeching about how SJWs ruined animation when in reality he can't get hired because he's banned from both the CN and DTVA animation campuses for being an asshole who threatened his coworkers.

Again, I will be watching the show. It looks cute. But Kate Leth is a well documented nightmare.

I think the art is very bad with obvious rookie mistakes, like characters being off model and looking weird. I guess it looks cute-ish, but it loses a lot of its appeal due to the bad art and animation. I'm not predicting the show will be terrible, but I have no faith that it'll be good. It'll be something that plops on crunchy roll and forgotten until it gets another series it doesn't deserves.

You're right though, there really should be a thread on Kate Leth; she's like the boogieman of the animation industry, but there's no real documentation on what she did.

My expectations for this show were lower than the Mariana Trench and the trailer hasn't done much to ease that, if anything it's made it worse.

I'll probably watch the first episode of the show to see how bad it really is and then sit back and let everyone else do the critiques because I can't be fucked to treat this as anything more than mediocre.
