I might be wrong about this, because it's been a while since I've read "Homage to Catalonia," but I believe that when Orwell arrived in Catalonia he basically just signed up for a militia the first chance he got, and that militia happened to be the POUM.Didn't he join the POUM because that was what the (UK) Independent Labour Party was telling its members to join?
Oh man, I'd forgotten that bit. Orwell is a funnier writer in his memoirs and essays than he is in his fiction. You know, way too many people read "Animal Farm" and "1984" and leave it at that. I think that's part of why so many people treat Orwell as a generic anti-authoritarian.One of Orwell's friends served in the propaganda brigade and sat at the front line shouting "we have buttered toast" at Nationalists to convince them to defect.
