Taliban offensive of 2021 and collapse of Afghan government.

Curious; are the Taliban shooting white dudes on sight? What's it actually like to be a foreigner in Taliban-held areas?
If it happens we're not aware of it, the only "white dudes" in Afghanistan tend to be journalist or contractors. Everyone with a brain has evacuated from combat zones in advance. Its hard to predict Taliban actions because its so localized in character, some groups are very well disciplined and follow orders and refrain from looting and pillaging. Others are the rape hordes right out of Africa. At the moment the more disciplined groups seem to just chat with journalist and give the ol "we dindu nuffin" response to any questions about atrocities. The Taliban looks like a uniform bloc of fighters at the moment but with closer inspection its really a kaleidoscope of competing tribes and interests and factions whom will have to deal with the tiresome task of administration and that tends to cause a lot of anger between these factions.

yea, as much as ARVN was considered a joke during Vietnam, a fair number of them still stood and fought for quite a while even after most of the US backed out. this is just shameful otoh - I'd imagine well over 50% of all Afghan forces were just bought off with EZ bribe money and told to stand down by whichever officer got bought.
ARVN had lots of issues but was cut off at the knees by the loss of American materiel support and the oil crisis, they could still hold out with American air support. ANA still has that but they're not even bothering to fight back at this point.

Afghanistan is where empires go to die.

These chads beat the US Empire just like their fathers beat the Soviet Empire.

I wonder who put up a better fight? The US LGBQT+ military forces or the Red Army? :lit:

I saw this article on ZeroHedge and I agree on their point. It'll be really awkward taking Kabul on Sept. 11th. https://www.zerohedge.com/geopoliti...awkward-if-taliban-takes-kabul-september-11th
One geopolitical observer at a D.C.-based think tank has stated the obvious, but which has remained unsaid in mainstream media coverage: "It’s going to be really awkward (and embarrassing) if the Taliban takes Kabul by September 11th."

To review: at least eleven provincial capitals have now fallen to the Taliban in just a little more than a week, major cities and towns are being handed over sometimes with "hardly a shot fired" as US-trained national forces are largely in retreat, the Taliban are now a mere 90 miles from Kabul as they prepare an inevitable major offensive, they've as of Thursday entered the second largest city of Kandahar in the south, and the US is actually thinking about evacuating and shuttering its embassy. As the Biden White House engages in hand-wringing and dubious half-hearted assurances of "no regrets" - the Taliban appear to be living it up, posting videos of enjoying their spoils.

Multiple videos like the above are now circulating on social media, underscoring the irony and full circle nature of Washington's 20+ year long war and occupation: the trillions poured into the country's coffers often went straight to lining the pockets of corrupt Afghan officials... said officials are now in retreat and abandoning their palaces (often found in the middle of some of the poorest towns in the world), and now amid the lighting fast Taliban offensive the bearded Islamists from the countryside are living like kings, as one report this week observes:

After capturing yet another strategic location in Afghanistan- Zaranj, the Taliban has taken over the palace of the Governor of the province. As is evident from the exclusive video brought to you by Republic Media Network, the members of the group can be seen squatting over the plush white couch of the palace and enjoying the delicacies on silver crockery kept on the gold-plated table in front.
Biden said this week of the deteriorating security situation and the government long propped up by the United States military: "They've got to fight for themselves."

This could get awkward, and hugely embarrassing, real fast...

Definitely the US, but the goal for both the Soviets and US was to prop up some quisling state that immediately fell apart the moment each state departed. The Afghani could never have taken on either state if the goal was Medieval or Ancient tier conquest featuring large scale genocide and enslaving of the people. The "Graveyard of Empires" shit is so trite because its just outright wrong. The Mongols steam rolled the region, the Islamic Calpihate steamrolled them and destroyed all of their local religions, the Persians owned them and Alexander literally founded Kabul, Herat, and Kandahar. The only reason the Afghani managed to dunk on the British, Soviets and Americans is because all three refused to just genocide 50% of the population for ideological reasons like the past invaders.

And now...looks like it'll be China's turn. The CCP dynasty will look to be the ones to cheat death.
Kandahar already fell today. Kabul may not last to Sept 11th the way the Taliban are advancing.
There's always the chance that they take on 9/11 for symbolism.

Wasn't the taliban a CIA black op as an excuse to keep the war on terror going on keep the middle east destabilised?
Not quite, they were a Pakistani ISI black op born out of the Pakistani desire for strategic depth which in turn was born out of the absolute ass-reaming they received from India during the Bangladeshi War of Independence. The idea was to have a client state in Afghanistan to use as the centerpiece of an anti-India alliance and as a hidey-hole for Pakistani troops in case they got BTFO again. They and the Saudis funded Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Mujahedeen faction during the Soviet War to this end but he turned out to be far too much of a teamkilling asshole to work with and the Taliban were much more amenable and picked up momentum fast.

The Soviets took 10 years to realize the war is unwinable. Thge US took 20 years. Guess the Soviets at that time had a better sense of odds. Well let's see how Russia and China will deal with the Taliban. China is already making rounds. Either they will go full "Muslims in concentrationcamps mode" or they will deal with them like they do with the Africans: suck their resources dry without them noticing it

I could see the CCP saying "but...but...we're not a empire" and then after some good bribing the talibans close their eyes about the Uyghurs.
